PREP ROUNDUP : Corona del Mar Defeats Sailors in Volleyball

Lara Carlsen had 11 kills to lead top-ranked Corona del Mar High School to a 15-9, 15-4, 15-8 victory over Newport Harbor in a Sea View League girls’ volleyball match at Newport Harbor Thursday.

Tracy Schriber had nine kills and Prentice Perkins had 22 assists for the Sea Kings (20-1, 10-0 in league).

In Empire League girls’ volleyball:

Cypress 3, Loara 0--Misty Hartung had 15 kills and three aces for league-champion Cypress (13-3, 10-0) in a 15-5, 15-6, 17-15 victory.

In Orange League girls’ volleyball:

Valencia 3, Anaheim 0--Amy Tamblyn had 10 kills and three blocks for league-champion Valencia (15-1, 10-0), a 15-2, 15-9, 15-7 winner.

In South Coast League volleyball:

Capistrano Valley 3, Mission Viejo 0--Allyson Carpenter, Toby Roquemore and Tanya Mitchell led host Capistrano Valley (9-1 in league) to a 17-15, 15-4, 15-11 victory and its second consecutive league championship.

El Toro 3, Irvine 0--Michelle Mauney and Marta Bickert each had eight kills as host El Toro (17-3, 9-1) won, 15-3, 15-3, 15-5, and finished in a tie for first place with Capistrano Valley.

In Academy League girls’ volleyball:

St Margaret’s 3, Cal Lutheran 0--Susie Teitsworth had 13 kills for host St. Margaret’s (13-6, 6-0), which clinched the league title with a 15-10, 15-7, 15-12 victory.

In Angelus League girls’ tennis:

Rosary 9, Santa Margarita 9 (Rosary wins on games, 68-65)--Joyce Cruz (6-0, 6-0, 6-0) and Mandy Gomez (6-0, 6-2, 6-0) each swept sets as Rosary (16-3, 7-1) clinched the league championship at Coto de Caza.

In the Orange League individual finals at the Anaheim tennis center, Cindy Kuragami of Savanna won the title for the fourth consecutive year by defeating Rachel Buenviaje of Brea-Olinda, 6-0, 6-0. In the doubles final, Cyndi Nguyen and Judy Hlavoc of Valencia defeated Connie Wei and Sara Wadhwani of Western, 6-3, 6-3.

In South Coast League tennis:

El Toro 11, Irvine 7--Host El Toro won eight of its nine doubles matches to force a playoff for the final playoff berth from the league. El Toro (10-10, 5-5) and Irvine (5-5 in league) will break the third-place tie with another match at 2:30 p.m. today at Mission Viejo High.

Capistrano Valley 16, Mission Viejo 2--Allison Light (6-0, 6-0, 6-0) and Lisa Shulga (6-1, 6-0, 6-0) swept their singles sets for host Capistrano Valley (15-4, 8-2), which finished second in league.
