Costa Mesa Shuts Down Estancia for 3rd in Row

A balanced running attack and stingy defense lifted Costa Mesa High School to a 26-3 victory over Estancia in a Pacific Coast League football game Friday night at Orange Coast College.

It was the third consecutive victory for the Mustangs (5-4, 3-1 in league). Estancia dropped to 2-7, 1-3

“We’re learning how to win, finally,” Costa Mesa Coach Tom Baldwin said.

Estancia’s Arm Hegazi opened the scoring with a 24-yard field goal with 11:40 left in the second quarter.

Costa Mesa’s defense stopped Estancia on its next drive as Ryan Parks sacked Matt Johner in the end zone for a safety with 8:55 left in the second quarter.

Costa Mesa quarterback Ryan McEvoy threw 35 yards to Duby Ospina for a touchdown with six minutes remaining in the second quarter. McEvoy threw to Quoc Pham for a two-point conversion to make the score 10-3.

The Mustang offense came alive in alive as the Eagles were grounded with 80 yards in penalties. With two minutes left in the third quarter, Ospina kicked a 20-yard field goal to push the lead to 13-3.
