Matt Haar and Jim Warner, two former local baseball standouts, have been named assistant coaches at San Diego State.

Haar, who coached the Aztecs junior varsity the past two seasons after a four-year career there and a brief stint in the minor leagues, will work primarily with the pitching staff. Haar, 25, was 10-5 with 13 saves (third best in school history) and a 3.00 earned run average as a relief pitcher for SDSU from 1984-87. He also was a standout pitcher for Helix High.

Warner, a former infielder/outfielder, will serve as the hitting coach. Warner, 25, played locally at Hoover High and Southwestern College before moving on to Loyola Marymount, where he helped the Lions to the 1986 College World Series. He had been an assistant coach at Southwestern the past two seasons.

Jim Dietz, the Aztecs head coach, was particularly pleased with the selections because it was the first time in his 19 years at the school that assistant coaches were hired by the university after the positions were openly advertised. In the past, Dietz said, the coaches were already involved in the program and, “They always just kind of evolved into them.”

Haar and Warner will both be involved in recruiting and administrative duties.

The positions are considered new ones because assistant coaches Gary Kondratek and Gary Brown were released last spring because of athletic department budget problems.

MEN’S TENNIS

San Diego State’s Ricardo Herrera, Joe McDonough, Kerry Safdie, Michael Sass and Chris Numbers each won two opening round matches to qualify for the round of 16 at the Region 7 Rolex Indoor Championships at Utah.

In doubles, Numbers-Herrera, Sass-McDonough and Dax Peterson-Jeff Belloli advanced to the round of 16 as well.

As a team, SDSU lost, 5-3, to Utah in the qualifying for the National Indoors tournament.
