Playing only as well as it needed to win, playoff-bound Capistrano Valley High School concluded its South Coast League season Thursday night with a 28-14 victory over Dana Hills.

The Cougars (8-2, 3-2 in league) looked sluggish at times and scored primarily on big gainers or after setting up touchdowns with big plays. And senior quarterback Tony Solliday and senior wide receiver Dave Poltl, of course, were smack in the middle of those plays.

Solliday completed 16 of 25 passes for 243 yards and four touchdowns, two of them to Poltl, who moved into second place all-time among Orange County receivers with 11 receptions on the night. He is 14 behind leader Rick Parma, who had 168 for Kennedy High between 1973-75.

Solliday went to Poltl to open the scoring on a six-yard pass with 8 minutes 58 seconds left in the first period. The two had combined moments earlier on a 36-yard pass play to set up the touchdown.

Capistrano Valley regained possession of the ball late in the first quarter and proceeded to cover 75 yards on nine plays for a 14-0 lead.

Junior running back Scott Patton scored the touchdown on a 14-yard pass from Solliday with 10:35 remaining before the half.

Dana Hills (4-5, 1-4), which was stuck on one-two-three-punt football on its first three possessions, put together an 81-yard drive that consumed most of the second quarter but it stalled on a tough goal-line stand by Capistrano Valley.

On first and goal from the Capistrano Valley two-yard line, Dolphin tailback Shaun Coleman gained only one yard. He then was thrown for a three-yard loss by linebacker Jon Petke and for a one-yard loss on third and goal by defensive tackle Danny West and linebacker Scott Newell.

Dana Hills kicker John Ashley’s 22-yard field-goal attempt sailed wide right.

Dana Hills finally scored with 3:09 left in the third period when tailback Marcus Jenkins burst untouched through the line of scrimmage and ran 75 yards for a touchdown.
