Telecasts involving college football’s three top-rated teams, the unbeatens of the National Football League and pro basketball’s and hockey’s now-struggling championship teams of the 1980s highlight the weekend’s sports viewing choices.

No. 1 Notre Dame seeks to avoid the pitfalls that have befallen other No. 1 teams this season when it visits No. 9 Tennessee at 11:30 a.m. on Channels 2 and 8, with SportsChannel replaying the game at 8:30 p.m.

In a Rose Bowl preview of sorts, Big Ten leading Iowa meets Ohio State at 9 a.m. on Channels 7, 3, 10 and 42, followed by Pacific 10 champion and No. 2 Washington taking on UCLA at 12:30 p.m. on the same stations.

In other telecasts involving teams ranked in the Associated Press Top 25, No. 3 Houston, the nation’s only major undefeated and untied team, faces No. 14 Texas (4:30 p.m. ESPN); No. 8 Brigham Young and Wyoming may decide the Western Athletic Conference championship and a Holiday Bowl berth (1 p.m., ESPN); No. 10 Florida vs. Georgia (9:30 a.m. TBS) and No. 23 USC seeks its 19th consecutive victory over Oregon State (3:30 p.m. Prime Ticket).

In Sunday’s pro football action, the New York Giants (8-0) meet the last team to defeat them in a game of consequence, the Rams (3-5) (1 p.m., Channel 2), while the San Francisco 49ers (8-0) face the Dallas Cowboys (3-6) (5 p.m. ESPN).

The pro football day begins at 10 a.m. on Channel 4 with the Kansas City Chiefs (5-3) meeting the Seattle Seahawks (3-5).

Sunday’s other NFL telecasts match the Chicago Bears (7-1) and Atlanta Falcons (3-5) (10 a.m., Channel 8) and San Diego Chargers (4-5) and Denver Broncos (3-5) (1 p.m., Channels 36 and 39).

The Edmonton Oilers and Lakers won nine championships between them in the 1980s, but both teams are off to slow starts in 1990.

The defending Stanley Cup champions have lost a team record eight consecutive games, are winless on the road, and their 2-10-2 record is second worst in the National Hockey League. With that in mind, the Oilers visit the Forum tonight for a 7:30 game against the Kings to be televised by Prime Ticket.

Things aren’t that bleak for the Lakers, although the team lost two games at the start of the season for the first time in 12 years. The Lakers host the New York Knicks Sunday at 7:30 p.m. in a game to be carried by Prime Ticket.
