Valencia Clinches Second Place by Routing Anaheim

Valencia High School clinched second place in the Orange League with a 49-24 victory over Anaheim Friday at Glover Stadium.

Valencia (8-2, 4-1 in league) got three touchdowns from running back Willie Barnes, and Ryan Roskelly ran for an 84-yard touchdown and returned an onside kick 51 yards for another touchdown, both in the fourth quarter.

The Tigers had 314 yards in total offense and cruised to the victory despite running less than half as many plays as Anaheim, 83-40. Anaheim (4-6, 2-3), which was eliminated from the playoffs with the loss, had 293 yards of total offense and 20 first downs but had five turnovers.

Anaheim scored first on a 66-yard touchdown run by Robert Jones with 6 minutes 29 seconds left in the first quarter. Valencia took the lead for good on touchdown runs of one and six yards by Barnes, the latter coming with 11:13 left in the second quarter.

Valencia took a 21-6 lead with 3:45 left in the first half when Kevin Alexander recovered teammate Phil Shewman’s fumble in the end zone.

Anaheim closed to within 21-12 at halftime with a two-yard run by Brian Diaz with 1:11 left in the half.
