ROUNDUP : Oxnard Downs San Diego City With 6 Players

The Oxnard College men’s basketball team, playing with a roster of six, held off San Diego City, 87-84, Saturday night in the third-place game of the Compton tournament.

The Condors have eight players, but two missed the game because of personal reasons. Art Santana fouled out midway through the second half and Omar Otis finished with four fouls.

Don Mitchell scored 24 points and Shawn Talley, a 5-foot-11 guard from Chicago, added 20 to help Oxnard stave off a late San Diego City rally.

“I give our kids all the credit in the world,” Oxnard Coach Remy McCarthy said. “They could have packed up and folded, but stayed in there and won the game.”

Oxnard improved to 4-1 and San Diego City is 1-3.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Pierce 75, Mesa 65--Melanie Sapon scored 24 points and Lisa Little added 23 points as Pierce (3-1) won the consolation championship of the Long Beach tournament.

Sapon and Little each scored six points in a 12-0 run late in the second half after Mesa had taken a one-point lead.

Little was named to the all-tournament team.

Moorpark 62, Cerritos 55-- Forward Kerri Marshall scored 22 points to win the tournament MVP and lead Moorpark (3-1) to the victory. Marshall and forward Lisa Huffaker, who scored three points in the final, were named to the all-tournament team.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Cal State Northridge d. UC Irvine, 15-12, 15-10, 15-11--The Matadors swept a nonconference match in Irvine’s Crawford Hall to improve to 24-8 overall.

Marianne Dixon led Northridge with a team-high nine kills and 13 digs. Teammate Jill Trehearne hit .833 with five kills while Kathleen Dixon added a game-high 14 digs. As a team, Northridge got by hitting just .197.

Irvine was led by Kim Collins, who had 16 kills and hit .343. Dana Chalais added nine kills for the Anteaters, but Irvine hit just .131 as a team.

EIGHT-MAN FOOTBALL

Antelope Valley Christian 52, Cal Lutheran 6--Sophomore quarterback Kris Kershaw passed for five touchdowns and two two-point conversions to lead the Eagles (11-0) in a Southern Section quarterfinal playoff game at Cal Lutheran.

Kershaw completed nine of 12 passes for 187 yards.

Antelope Valley Christian will play Lone Pine in a semifinal game at a site to be determined.
