PRO FOOTBALL REPORT : WEEKDAY UPDATE : AROUND THE NFL : Wyche Says Tagliabue’s Office Leaks

Cincinnati Bengal Coach Sam Wyche, fined nearly $28,000 this season by Commissioner Paul Tagliabue for barring female reporters from locker rooms, says the commissioner’s office may be leaking internal reports to news organizations.

Commentator Will McDonough reported Sunday on NBC that the NFL’s two-month investigation into allegations that New England Patriot players harassed Boston sportswriter Lisa Olson showed that aspects of the incident appeared to have been exaggerated.

“That knocks me over to think that Will McDonough can call somebody with what he calls contacts, and someone in the league office can release on Sunday at 12:30 the contents of a private investigation,” Wyche told reporters at the Bengals’ training field. Wyche still insists that someone in the NFL office leaked his salary to reporters.

San Francisco 49er safety Ronnie Lott says the team has offered him a “fantastic” three-year contract extension that would pay him more per year than his current $800,000 salary.

Lott, 31 and a 10-year veteran who is in the final year of a multiyear contract, said he expects to sign the contract this week.

Rookie San Diego Charger linebacker Jeff Mills was suspended for a week for “conduct detrimental to the team,” the club said.

Mills, a third-round draft pick out of Nebraska, missed meetings and practice last Friday, the Chargers said.

There was no other immediate comment from the team.

Mills has been on the Chargers’ injured reserve list since Oct. 27 with a pulled hamstring.
