SOUTHERN SECTION FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS : Laguna Hills’ Mistakes Help San Marino

Two bad snaps and three interceptions helped undefeated San Marino High School beat Laguna Hills, 32-20, in a Division VII quarterfinal game Friday night at Mission Viejo High.

The costly mistakes overshadowed Marwan Saba’s offensive play for Laguna Hills (9-2-1). Saba gained 236 of the Hawks’ 224 yards rushing in 25 carries and scored two touchdowns, one on a 75-yard run.

San Marino (11-0) plays Lompoc in the semifinals next Saturday. Lompoc advanced by defeating Glenn, 51-6.

D.R. Moreland stopped two Laguna Hills’ scoring drives when he intercepted one Casey Sullivan pass in the end zone and one at the San Marino 12-yard line in the fourth quarter. The second interception allowed Alfonso Montoya, who rushed for 139 of San Marino’s 209 yards, to score on an 88-yard with 2:41 left.

Shannon Ching intercepted Sullivan at the San Marino 20 with 1:15 remaining. Sullivan completed five of 18 passes for 132 yards and threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Dave Childs.

Late in the first quarter Marc Broadbeck took a bad snap from Dave Vollenhais and was tackled at the San Marino four-yard line. Jason Baffa (70 yards in 10 carries) scored from the three on the second play from scrimmage with 14 seconds remaining.

Childs returned the ensuing kick to the Laguna Hills’ 25-yard line, and Saba broke a tackle en route to a 75-yard touchdown run that tied the game at 7.
