NBA ROUNDUP : SuperSonics Need Help From Rice to End Losing Streak

Miami’s Glen Rice is going to have difficulty forgetting the free throws he missed with three seconds to play.

The missed shots cost the Heat a chance to send the game into overtime at Miami Thursday night as the SuperSonics won, 105-103, to end their six-game losing streak.

Sedale Threatt hit a tiebreaking free throw with 49.7 seconds remaining. He snapped the game’s 15th tie when he hit the foul shot after the Heat was given a technical foul for an illegal defense.

Threatt led five SuperSonics in double figures with 18 points and added 11 assists. Olden Polynice added 16 points and Xavier McDaniel had 15.

Rony Seikaly led Miami with 27 points. Sherman Douglas had 20 points and 10 assists, giving him 25 assists in the past two games.

Houston 116, Charlotte 110--Akeem Olajuwon had 39 points, 20 rebunds and six blocked shots to lead the Rockets past the Hornets at Houston.

Houston’s inside game produced 83 points as Otis Thorpe added 17 points and 10 rebounds and Buck Johnson scored 15 points. Guard Sleepy Floyd added 20 points and helped the Rockets stay in front after Charlotte rallied from a 17-point third-quarter deficit. Floyd was eight of eight from the free-throw line in the game’s final 81 seconds.

Johnny Newman had 26 points and 11 rebounds for the Hornets. Rex Chapman finished with 20 points.

Sacramento 104, Washington 86--Waymon Tisdale scored 27 points to give the Kings back-to-back victories at home for the first time since January.

Tisdale shot 12 for 13 from the field and was backed by 26 points from rookie Travis Mays and 18 from Rory Sparrow as the Kings, who have won only four of their last 37 games, earned consecutive victories at Arco Arena for the first time since Jan. 22-24.

Bernard King topped Washington with 25 points and A.J. English added 17.
