PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Parks Scores 34, but Tustin Beats Marina

Solid first-quarter play and execution helped Tustin High School defeat Marina, 67-50, for the title in the second Trabuco Hills High School basketball tournament Saturday.

Tustin (4-0), led by David Beilstein’s 22 points, took an 18-4 lead with 2:11 left in the first quarter and never looked back. Beilstein shared co-most valuable player honors with Cherokee Parks of Marina.

“We played solid man-to-man defense and double-teamed Parks down at the post,” Tustin Coach Tom McCluskey said. “We played relaxed, we concentrated on what we wanted to do and we executed well.”

Parks, who scored 34 points for Marina (3-2), made two free throws with 6:49 left to cut Tustin’s lead to 11 points, 52-41.

In the Trabuco Hills Tournament:

Los Alamitos 56, Mater Dei 55--In the fifth-place game, Los Alamitos (4-2) handed the Monarchs their second loss in the past three games and second in the past 30.

Capistrano Valley 71, J.W. North 57--Tom Airey scored 10 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter to lead Capistrano Valley. Brett McCorkle scored 21 points for Capistrano Valley.

Mission Viejo 84, University 77--Mark Wright scored 21 points to lead Mission Viejo in the fifth-place game.
