Alex Semenik, a 6-foot-3, 240-pound tight end from Scottsdale (Ariz.) Community College, has signed a national letter of intent to attend San Diego State next year. He will enroll at SDSU next semester and join the Aztecs for spring football.

Semenik said he turned down scholarship offers from Purdue and Central Michigan, and cancelled a trip to Memphis State.

“I wanted to stay closer to home,” said Semenik, a Scottsdale native. “And (SDSU) throws the ball a lot.”

He caught 23 passes for 450 yards and three touchdowns last year, and was named to the all-Western States Football League team.

“He’s got great hands and is a good blocker. I think they’re getting a great one--he’s the best (tight end) I’ve had,” said Shane Bates, Scottsdale head coach the past four years and an assistant there for four years prior to that.

Semenik has been playing football for just two years. He was on the basketball team at Saguaro High School in Scottsdale, but he didn’t see much of a future in it.

“I wasn’t going where I wanted to in basketball, so I decided to try football,” he said.
