1-Ton Boulder Pins Man in Trench for 3 Hours

A construction worker was trapped in a 4-foot-deep trench at Universal Studios for three hours Thursday after a one-ton boulder pinned his legs, Los Angeles County fire officials said. Robert Truelove, 32, was treated at St. Joseph Medical Center for a minor leg injury and released, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The accident occurred shortly after noon near the tour area of Universal Studios while Truelove was working on a sewer line, Capt. Frank McDermott said.

“For some unknown reason the ground shifted,” McDermott said, and the large boulder and two smaller ones rolled into the trench, pinning Truelove’s legs.

Using pulleys and cables to lift the boulders, rescuers freed the man shortly after 3 p.m. The sewer is part of a construction project for an employee cafeteria.
