ROUNDUP : Strong 3rd Quarter Propels Santa Clara

A slow-paced first half did not stop the Santa Clara High boys’ basketball team in the first round of the Page tournament in Page, Ariz., on Thursday night.

Trailing by two points at halftime, Santa Clara picked up the pace in the third quarter and broke free for a 55-44 victory over Red Mountain (Ariz.).

Santa Clara (9-1) outscored Red Mountain, 19-5, in the third quarter and finished with four double-figure scorers. Steve Amar had 16 points, Art Barron had 13, Chris Cole had 12 and Isaiah Mustafa added 10.

Canyon 75, Burroughs 62--Jermaine Nixon had 28 points and 13 rebounds for Canyon (6-3) in a nonleague game.

Valley Torah 76, Glendale Academy 63--Liran Mayouhas scored 22 points for Valley Torah.

Whitney 64, Oakwood 57--Telly Roberts scored 22 points for Oakwood in a consolation game.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Alemany 65, St. Joseph’s 57--Rachel Corelli scored a team-high 23 points and Sarah Guziel added 15 points and 10 rebounds for Alemany (6-5).

Campbell Hall 40, Montclair Prep 31--Joanna Paul scored 15 points to lead Campbell Hall into the championship game of its own tournament.

Bell-Jeff 82, Hoover 48--Lori Leon (22 points, 17 rebounds) and Ingrid Ochoa (21 and 12) led Bell-Jeff.

Oakwood 28, Pacific Christian 23--Erin Farrell had 16 points for Oakwood.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Chaminade 4, Kaiser (Hawaii) 0--Laura Gross scored two goals for Chaminade (6-0-3) in a first-round match in the Mililani tournament on Oahu.

Crescenta Valley 6, Monrovia 1--Jodi Larson and Danae Fielder each scored two goals for Crescenta Valley (9-0).

Saugus 3, Hueneme 0--Fran Marbury, Amy Gillis and Deborah Taggart each scored for Saugus.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Master’s 66, Western Baptist 53--Reserves Stacy Ford (18 points) and Sandy Cumming (16) sparked Master’s (1-10) in a nonconference game.

Rancho Santiago 62, Oxnard 56--Oxnard’s Nicole Force led all scorers with 28 points.
