PREP ROUNDUP : Sunny Hills Girls Go With the Wind And Win in Soccer

Sunny Hills High School defeated Laguna Hills, 3-2, Thursday by going with the wind and scoring three goals in the second half in a nonleague girls’ soccer game at Laguna Hills.

Laguna Hills (2-5) took a 2-0 lead with the wind at its back in the first half on goals by Jennifer Foster and Cristy Capshaw. It was the first time Sunny Hills (8-0) has trailed this season.

But Sunny Hills tied the score on goals by Heidi Gugler and Leah Russell, and Stacy Thurber scored the game-winning goal with five minutes remaining.

In other nonleague girls’ soccer:

Troy 6, Rosary 1--Jenny Scanlon scored four goals and Pauline Kinnane had two to lead Troy (6-0) at Chapman Park. Lana McHugh scored for Rosary (7-2-3).

Katella 1, Sonora 0--Beth Meunier scored on an assist from Carol Hipp for host Katella (5-3-1). Sonora is 3-4-1.

Foothill 1, Fountain Valley 1--Denise Maram scored in the first half for host Foothill (3-4-1), and Michelle Watson scored in the second half for Fountain Valley (3-2-3). Julie Ehret had 13 saves for Foothill, and Kelly Gillis had 11 for Fountain Valley.

El Modena 0, University 0--Summer Nastich had six saves for University and Amy Moreno had five for El Modena (3-3-1).

El Dorado 3, La Habra 0--Debbie Anderson, Leslie March and Azsha Drennan scored for host El Dorado (7-0-3).

Estancia 1, Ocean View 1--Danielle Straub scored for visiting Estancia (7-2-2).

Orange Lutheran 3, Santa Ana Valley 1--Shawnna Johnson scored two goals and Kristina Riedmann had one for host Orange Lutheran (3-3-1). Veronica Garcia scored for Santa Ana Valley.

Esperanza 3, Santa Margarita 0--Lynn Murray scored two goals and Jenni Coughlin added another for host Esperanza (7-0-1).

In Olympic League girls’ soccer:

Capistrano Valley Christian 3, Brethren 0--Megan Mahlstadt, Katie Bell and Erin Davenport scored for host Capistrano Valley Christian (4-1-1).

In nonleague boys’ soccer:

Saddleback 7, Century 0--Jose Escudero scored three goals and Elio Cisneros, Alberto Tinoneo, Julio Orozco and Angel Carate each scored one for host Saddleback (7-1-1).

Orange 2, Troy 2--Justin Zayas and Rogelio Marquez scored for Orange (7-0-3). Troy had taken a 2-0 lead in the first three minutes.

Trabuco Hills 1, Woodbridge 0--Tom Fill scored for host Trabuco Hills (4-4-3).

Huntington Beach 1, Capistrano Valley 1--John-Eric Bolger scored for host Capistrano Valley (2-4-2). Huntington Beach is 2-0-4.

In the La Quinta girls’ basketball tournament:

Savanna 69, Corona del Mar 42--Stacey Aliff scored 25 points for Savanna (10-1), which plays Dana Hills at 7:30 tonight in the championship game.

Esperanza 62, Orange 38--Lisa Ruppe had 21 points and seven rebounds and Kerry Edwards scored 19 and had seven rebounds for Esperanza (7-3). Ginny Hall scored 22 points for Orange.

In nonleague girls’ basketball:

Century 67, Anaheim 35--Yessenia Cota scored 20 points for host Century (3-5). Laura Zepeda and Lucy Guerrero each had 15 points and Gabby Mendoza added 11 for Century.

Ocean View 64, Long Beach Poly 45--Kristen McCluskey scored 17 for visiting Ocean View (6-3).

Magnolia 61, Laguna Beach 27--Joyce Pe’a scored 21 points for visiting Magnolia (6-1).
