BOYS’ ROUNDUP : Tomko Scores 55 Points in El Dorado’s Victory

Brett Tomko scored 55 points, the third-highest total in Orange County history, in El Dorado High School’s 86-83 overtime victory against Compton in a consolation game of the Brea-Olinda Tournament Thursday.

Tomko, a 6-foot-4 senior forward who had never scored more than 24 points in a game and had a 17.2 average, scored 23 points in the fourth quarter to help El Dorado (5-5) rally from a 60-45 deficit. Tomko added seven points in overtime.

Tomko’s performance tied Mark Wulfemeyer, who scored 55 for Troy in 1974. Loara’s Tes Whitlock scored 68 points Saturday to break the 80-year-old record of 58, set by Art Worthy of Huntington Beach.

Tomko, who made 20 of 26 shots from the field and 15 of 17 free throws, broke the school record of 42 set in 1980 by Ken Botka.

“Most of his shots were from inside the key,” El Dorado Coach Wayne Carlson said. “They never shut him down at all. We just kept getting the ball to him.”

In the Coast Christmas tournament at Estancia High School:

Estancia 67, Dana Hills 50--Son Ly had 24 points and Matt Fuerbringer 21 for Estancia in a second-round game.

Edison 53, Irvine 45--Greg Miller had 14 points and Brandon Jessie 12 for Edison in a second-round game.

Tustin 71, Huntington Beach 65--David Beilstein had 19 points and Thomas Clayton 18 for Tustin, the county’s top-ranked team, in a second-round game. Bryan Chang scored 24 points, including five three-pointers, for Huntington Beach.

Corona del Mar 57, Laguna Hills 46--Jon Upham had 20 points as the Sea Kings outscored the Hawks, 32-22, in the second half of a second-round consolation game. Paul LaMott had 22 points for Laguna Hills.

Estancia JV 49, Mission Viejo 44--Russell King scored 13 points as Estancia outscored Mission Viejo, 26-20, in the second half of a second-round consolation game.

In the Burger King Prepstar Shootout:

El Toro 72, Seneca (S.C.) 64--El Toro trailed by two at the half and fell behind, 41-32, early in the third quarter before rallying in the first round at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Fayetteville, N.C. The Chargers (7-4) led, 53-48, after three quarters and were never challenged thereafter. Rob Johnson had 25 points, seven rebounds and six assists and Jeremy Hogue added 22 points for El Toro. The Chargers will play the tournament’s second-seeded team, Rice High School of New York, at 3:30 p.m. (PST) today in the semifinals.

In the Las Vegas tournament:

Woodbridge 50, Ocean View 49--Jim Harris missed a three-point shot at the buzzer and Ocean View’s rally fell short in the second round. Ryan Rauch scored 20 for Woodbridge, which led, 29-21, at the half. Ryan Martin missed the game with a back injury he suffered in a first-round game Wednesday. Bryan Knox scored 14 for Ocean View (5-6).

In the Atascadero tournament:

Valencia 63, Mira Costa 60--Justin Jimenez made two free throws with 17 seconds remaining to put Valencia ahead, 63-60, in a first-round game. Mira Costa missed a three-point attempt at the buzzer. Adolfo Gomez had 19 points and Jimenez 15 for Valencia (7-2).

In the Pacifica tournament:

Pacifica 93, Magnolia 64--Kevin Gaughen scored 30 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Scott Lesser scored 21 points and had 14 rebounds for Pacifica (3-3). Larry Nagata and Brian Danskin each added 10 points for Pacifica.

Santa Margarita 59, Miraleste 49--Jeff Layne scored 23 points and Mike Carpenter 13 for Santa Margarita (8-3). Santa Margarita outscored Miraleste, 24-14, in the second quarter. Layne had eight points and Carpenter seven in the second quarter.

In the Ribet Academy tournament:

Camp Kilpatrick 51, Brethren Christian 44--Camp Kilpatrick made 10 of 17 free throws in the fourth quarter and outscored Brethren Christian, 20-7, in the final game of pool play. Brandon Stott had 12 points for Brethren Christian (7-2), which advances to the consolation bracket for a game against St. Genevieve at 4 p.m. today.

In the Torrance District tournament:

Leuzinger 85, Rancho Alamitos 60--Matt Roberts scored 13 points for Rancho Alamitos in a semifinal.
