Karpov Keeps Chess Prize Hopes Alive

Anatoly Karpov kept his hopes alive for a 50-50 cut of the $3-million World Chess Championship prize money Saturday by defeating Gary Kasparov, who has already won the title, in the 23rd game of their match.

Karpov, playing white, forced his fellow Soviet grandmaster to withdraw in the 29th move after 3 hours, 50 minutes of play. The pair play their 24th and final game Monday.

Kasparov successfully defended his title for the third time by drawing Wednesday with Karpov. The final two games remain important for both men in terms of dividing up the prize money.

Karpov needed to win the last two matches to come even with Kasparov and assure himself of an equal $1.5-million share with his rival. He got halfway there Saturday night.
