Tracy Titus scored 61 points--an Orange County single-game girls’ record--in a 78-50 Loara High School victory over Los Alamitos in an Empire League basketball game Thursday at Loara.

Titus scored all 19 of Loara’s points in the fourth quarter and broke the record of 60 set last season by La Quinta’s Amy Jalewalia.

Titus, a 6-2 senior center, played even though she spent most of the day sick in bed.

Loara’s Tes Whitlock, who set the county boys’ scoring record with 68 points in December, attended Thursday night’s game. Titus said she and Whitlock spoke briefly afterward.

“He was really happy,” she said. “He would have been upset if I would have broken his record, though.

“If I would have scored more points than he did, I don’t know what he would have done, but I would have teased him a lot.”

Titus made 28 of 43 shots from the field, five of 10 free throws and had 19 rebounds. She had 42 points entering the fourth quarter.

Loara (8-7, 1-0) had the game in hand by that point, leading, 59-40, and started the fourth quarter with the second team. But Titus asked to go back in the game after she discovered how many points she had. She entered the game in the first minute of the quarter.

“She was a little slower tonight,” Loara Coach Lynn Parish said. “She usually is the first one up and down the floor, but obviously it didn’t hurt her offensively tonight. We think she should get the flu more often.”

Titus also broke her school record of 46 points she set this season against Canyon.

Cindy Yamasaki scored 20 points for Los Alamitos.
