School: Laguna Beach High Sport: Basketball Position: Guard Class: Senior

Borella, the point guard for the Division 2-A runners-up last year, is the only letterman returning this season and he has had to become more of a scorer for the Artists this time around. “He’s not a selfish player so it was a little difficult early on in the fall to make him realize how many times we wanted him to shoot the ball,” Laguna Beach Coach Bret Fleming said. “But he seems to like it. I mean, what kid wouldn’t?” After 15 games, Borella is averaging 29.5 points. In his last four games, he is averaging 36.2, and Laguna Beach (9-6) has won three of its last four games. Borella is scoring despite special defenses designed to stop him, Fleming said. Last week, Borella scored 38, 37 and 32 points in three victories. Other top performers:

Kevin Gaughen, who scored a school-record 41 points in three quarters during an 80-65 victory over La Quinta. Gaughen broke the record of 40 set by Dustin Bonham in 1988.

Matt Padgett, won the 160-pound division and was named the wrestler of the meet in the upper weight divisions while helping Canyon win the Estancia tournament title.
