A moderate earthquake struck south of here today, but no damage or injuries were reported.

The quake, which had a magnitude of 4.7, hit at 8:38 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was centered along the coastal Sur Fault at Point Lopez and felt as far north as Watsonville.

“There’s been a lot of small ones down there in the last week, but this is the first one that’s been felt,” said Pat Jorgenson, a USGS spokeswoman in Menlo Park.

The quake was felt strongly at Nepenthe Restaurant, which sits on a cliff 800 feet above the Pacific Ocean.

“I heard this big thump overhead,” said owner Holly Fassett. “It could have been somebody dropping something heavy, like a piano. The legs on my big wooden chair felt like toothpicks. I was really scared.”
