POINT MUGU : Base Honored Over Minority Contracts

Share

Point Mugu Naval Air Station was honored Monday by the Small Business Administration as the leading federal agency in Ventura, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara counties for contracting with minority-owned businesses.

Of the money Point Mugu paid to contractors in 1990, 23% went to minority-owned businesses. The base was similarly honored by the administration last year for its performance in 1989. The administration opened a Ventura office in 1988.

“Point Mugu is being recognized for their outstanding work,” Small Business Administration spokesman John Tumpak said. “It has given minority-owned small businesses an opportunity to compete for government contracts for which they otherwise would not be able to compete.”

Most of the minority firms contracted perform service-related functions on the base, including construction, repair and janitorial work.

“This has actually proven to be very beneficial to the taxpayers. The minority businesses quite frequently provide the services cheaper and more efficiently than larger corporations, which usually have higher overhead costs,” Tumpak said.
