CSUN’s Gibbs Likely to Miss USIU Contest

Keith Gibbs, a starter for the Cal State Northridge basketball team, was released from Northridge Hospital Medical Center on Tuesday afternoon but said he doubts that he will be strong enough to play Thursday against U.S. International in San Diego.

Gibbs, a swingman and the team leader in steals, was taken to the hospital Monday night after fainting 35 seconds into the second half of CSUN’s 95-77 loss to Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

The episode was triggered by dehydration, but a lack of food in Gibbs’ system was also a factor. Because of a three-hour class, he missed the team’s pregame meal.

“I haven’t been taking care of myself,” said Gibbs, who has been unable to add weight to his 6-foot-5, 180-pound frame.

Gibbs was not the only member of the basketball team in the hospital Monday. Coach Pete Cassidy remains in stable condition at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center with an intestinal problem. Also, X-rays Tuesday on center Todd Bowser’s right shoulder were negative. Bowser, the team’s second-leading scorer and rebounder, has missed the past two games but he will attempt to practice today.
