PREP SOCCER PLAYOFFS : Pacifica Defeats Costa Mesa in Wild-Card Game

Mike Christie scored with 11 minutes left to give the Pacifica boys’ soccer team a 5-4 victory over Costa Mesa in a Southern Section Division 2-A wild-card game Tuesday at Costa Mesa.

Trailing 3-0 at halftime, Pacifica (10-7-4) scored three goals in the first 11 minutes of the second half to tie the score and went ahead 4-3 on a penalty kick by Julien Born 13 minutes into the half. Ten minutes later, Costa Mesa’s Jacobo Garcia scored to tie it at 4.

Christie had two goals and Eric Stevens and Jeff Pierson also scored for Pacifica. Owen Markert had two goals and Duby Ospina had one for Costa Mesa (10-6-4).

In another 2-A boys’ wild-card game:

Valencia 2, Esperanza 1 (OT)--Steve Johnson scored seven minutes into overtime for host Valencia (10-8-4). Valencia scored first late in the first half on a goal by Joel Camerena. With seven minutes remaining, Troy Duncan scored to tie the score, 1-1, for Esperanza (10-4-8).

In 4-A girls’ soccer wild-card games:

Esperanza 1, Dana Hills 1 (Esperanza advances on penalty kicks, 3-2)--Esperanza goalkeeper Jennifer Bryant saved three penalty kicks for host Esperanza (18-2-4). Janet Gamblin scored scored with 10 minutes left in regulation for Esperanza to tie the score. Amy Kroeger scored midway through the first half for Dana Hills (11-7-4).

Edison 4, Beverly Hills 0--Janell Martin, Jill Kruzinski, Shelly Blanco, and Jennifer Lachman each scored for host Edison (16-3-6), which advances to play at Corona del Mar in the first round Friday.

In a 3-A girls’ soccer wild-card game:

Troy 1, El Modena 0--Layne Mosler scored with seven minutes left in the first half for visiting Troy (13-2-2). El Modena, which outshot Troy 20-12, finished 8-9-4.
