COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Valley Women Clinch Fourth Consecutive WSC Title

The Valley College women’s basketball team clinched a share of its fourth consecutive Western State Conference championship with a 91-77 victory over visiting Bakersfield in a WSC Southern Division game Wednesday night.

The Monarchs, ranked No. 3 in the state by the J. C. Athletic Bureau, can win the title outright with a victory over Santa Monica on Saturday.

Tisa Rush had 35 points, nine rebounds and six assists and Roz Linton had 15 points and 18 rebounds to lead Valley (27-4, 8-1 in conference play).

Valley led at halftime, 50-44, but Bakersfield (19-10, 7-2) closed to 81-77 with four minutes to play.

However, Rush, who made seven of eight free throws in the second half and 10 of 12 in the game, sank four consecutive free throws down the stretch.

In other women’s basketball games:

Ventura 68, Cuesta 57--Visiting Ventura clinched a share of the WSC Northern Division title with its fifth consecutive win.

Ventura (10-1, 7-1) has not allowed more than 57 points in any game during the streak.

Venessa Hackett had 21 points and 12 rebounds and Marli Mactal added eight assists for Ventura.

Canyons 117, Glendale 11--Kim Posey and Keira Irwin scored career-high totals of 37 and 27 points, respectively, and Canyons broke the school single-game scoring record in the WSC Southern Division game at Glendale.

Irwin tied a career best with 18 assists and made six three-point baskets, giving her 93 for her career and surpassing Tressie Millender’s school record of 91.

Shannon Solway added 22 points for Canyons (15-15, 4-5). Glendale is 0-15, 0-9.

Moorpark 72, Santa Barbara 41--Angie Long scored 16 of her game-high 19 points in the second half to help the Raiders (27-4, 6-1) beat host Santa Barbara in a WSC Northern Division game.

Moorpark led, 33-24, at halftime, and allowed just 17 points in the second half. Santa Barbara made only 13 field goals in the game.

Antelope Valley 67, Desert 65 (OT)--Paula Page scored 19 points and had 14 rebounds to lead host Antelope Valley (9-15, 6-5) in the Foothill Conference game.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Antelope Valley 129, Desert 108--Antelope Valley broke three scoring records in its regular-season finale in a Foothill Conference game at home.

J. R. Rider (41 points) and Tony Madison (37) both broke Mike Adams’ single-season scoring record of 755 points, set in 1969-70.

Madison has 760 points and Rider has 758. Adams set the record in 29 games, but Madison and Rider accomplished the feat in 27 and 22 games.

Rider, who is averaging 34.5 points a game, also broke Adams’ single-season scoring average record of 24.3. Antelope Valley (24-5, 14-2) averaged 105.1 points during the season, breaking the mark of 95.7 set last year.

Moorpark 86, Santa Barbara 73--Damian Wilson set a school record for most field goals in a game with 16 and scored a game-high 37 points to lead the Raiders (25-5, 5-2) past the Vaqueros in a WSC Northern Division game at Santa Barbara.

The Raiders led, 42-25, at halftime. Sam Crawford had 11 points and 15 assists.

Five Vaqueros scored in double figures, led by Dana Jimmerson’s 21.

Valley 94, Bakersfield 78--Russell Baldwin had 28 points and 13 rebounds and Art Kirksey added 22 points and 17 rebounds to lead host Valley (18-12, 7-2) to the WSC Southern Division victory.

Ventura 82, Cuesta 55--Lester Neal scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Pirates (28-4, 14-0) at Cuesta. Ventura led, 43-22, at halftime.

DiJon Barnard scored 19 points for the Pirates and Calvin Curry added 16.

BASEBALL

Cal Lutheran 6, Azusa Pacific 2--Pete Washington was two for three, including a home run and a double, and drove in two runs for Cal Lutheran (3-1, 1-0) in an NAIA District 3 game at Azusa Pacific.

Jason Wilcox hit a home run and scored twice for the Kingsmen.

SOFTBALL

Moorpark 9, El Camino 4--Kathy Morales was two for three with a run-scoring double and earned the pitching victory for host Moorpark (1-0) in a nonconference game.

Tammi Kauffman drove in three runs with two doubles and Tami Harp hit a three-run home run.
