Notes on a Scorecard - Feb. 20, 1991

Share

Is Los Angeles big enough for two Bo Jacksons? After catching nine passes for an 18-yard average as a redshirt freshman wide receiver last fall, Michael Moore of UCLA is hitting .475 as a Bruin center fielder. . . .

The 6-foot-4, 196-pound Beverly Hills High graduate is the nephew of NBC broadcaster Ahmad Rashad, who wasn’t a bad wide receiver, either. . . .

Moore lists the Toronto Blue Jays as his favorite pro team. Maybe that’s because the Blue Jays drafted him in the second round in June of 1989. . . .

Home-court advantage: Cal State Long Beach lost to Nevada Las Vegas by only 47 points Monday night at the Long Beach Arena after losing by 51 points last month at the Thomas & Mack Center. . . .

We’re not suggesting that it’s going to happen again soon, but the last time UCLA finished with a conference record below .500 was 1947-48, the season before John Wooden arrived in Westwood. . . .

Good news for the USC football program, which can use some--Mark Carrier, Tim Ryan, Dan Owens and Brent Parkinson of the 1989 team are back in school, working toward their degrees. . . .

Ronnie Lott has a new job. He will be the commentator on radio broadcasts of Sacramento Surge games in the World League of American Football this spring. . . .

If you still wonder why they don’t eliminate fighting in the NHL, you didn’t see the King-Washington game Monday afternoon at the Forum. The capacity crowd roared when the Kings’ Jay Miller and the Capitals’ Alan May went at it. . . .

General Manager Rogie Vachon took some heat when he dealt Mike Krushelnyski to the Toronto Maple Leafs for John McIntyre. No longer, though. McIntyre has added muscle to the King lineup. . . .

Wayne Gretzky still hasn’t beaten a goaltender in eight games. . . .

The Kings and Lakers are trying to make the Forum the fourth building to play host to contestants in the Stanley Cup championship series and NBA finals the same season. It has been done three times at Boston Garden, once at Madison Square Garden and once at the Spectrum. However, teams from the same city have never won the Cup and the NBA championship the same season. . . .

In the playoffs, do the Kings keep alternating Kelly Hrudey and Daniel Berthiaume or go with the hotter goaltender? . . .

King goalie prospect Robb Stauber is having a disappointing season at New Haven. . . .

If you’re looking for an excuse to catch the Quebec Nordiques at the Forum tonight, it will be your last chance to see Guy Lafleur play. . . .

Marques Johnson has a featured role in an American Film Institute production loosely based on the life of Raymond Lewis, former Verbum Dei and Cal State Los Angeles star. . . .

USC freshman center Lisa Leslie hasn’t revolutionized the game yet, but she is averaging 19.5 points and 10.6 rebounds. Her numbers would be even better if she hadn’t fouled out nine times. . . .

No wonder U.S. International lost again Monday. It was playing on the Kangaroo court at Missouri Kansas City. . . .

Unlike Bob Knight in 1984, U.S. Olympic basketball Coach Chuck Daly will find a place for Charles Barkley on the 1992 team. . . .

The Jim Bush era gets out of the starting blocks Feb. 28 at USC when the men’s and women’s track teams are honored at a banquet at Town & Gown Hall on campus. . . .

Trojan sprinter Inger Miller, a former Tournament of Roses princess, is the daughter of Olympic Games medalist Lennox Miller. And another sprinter, Melanna Gray, is the daughter of former Cardinal all-pro wide receiver Mel Gray. . . .

Ben Johnson is getting all the publicity, but Leroy Burrell is the best indoor sprinter. . . .

The red wig is back! The oversized hairpiece that has been missing from the baseball program since Rod Dedeaux left reappeared during the Trojans’ trip to Hawaii. Wearing the wig was freshman infielder Lionel Hastings. Among those he surprised with it at the airport was actress Jamie Lee Curtis. . . .

Proof that pro scouts are looking for bulk on offense and quickness on defense: Ten offensive linemen and only four defensive linemen weighed at least 290 pounds at the NFL combine in Indianapolis. . . .

The race track scams in “The Grifters” are nonsensical. . . .

There could be a father-son angle to the Kentucky Derby. Charlie Whittingham trains highly regarded Compelling Sound and Excavate, and Michael Whittingham will saddle unbeaten Whadjathink in the Bradbury Stakes today at Santa Anita. . . .

The biggest round of applause that Hollywood Park President R. D. Hubbard received during Monday’s shareholders’ meeting was when he announced plans to bring back the Goose Girl. . . .

For the first time, there were as many American flags as Confederate at the Daytona 500. . . .

Only two more days until pitchers and catchers report to spring training.
