PREP BASKETBALL PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : San Pedro Isn’t a Problem for Manual Arts

Second-ranked Manual Arts warmed up for its semifinal showdown with Washington by easily defeating San Pedro, 105-82, Wednesday night in a City 4-A Division quarterfinal game at Manual Arts.

The Toilers (22-3) will play the Generals Friday night at a site to be determined. The teams split two games during the regular season.

“It’s going to be quite a showdown,” Manual Arts Coach Randolph Simpson said. “Whatever gym we play in, it will be packed.”

Manual Arts, the defending 4-A champion, led from start to finish. The Pirates (21-6) trailed, 49-34, at halftime and would get no closer in the second half.

The Toilers were led by guard Dwain Bradberry’s 28 points. Kevin Beal added 24.

Washington 87, Cleveland 79--The fourth-ranked Generals handled the Cavaliers with their fast break and superior rebounding in a City 4-A quarterfinal game at Cleveland.

Washington center Barnabus James scored a game-high 30 points and added a school-record 22 rebounds.

The Generals improved to 21-4 and Cleveland finished 19-6.

Fremont 73, Venice 54--The Pathfinders improved to 29-1 with an easy home victory in the City 3-A quarterfinals.

The Gondoliers (17-11) trailed by only nine points at halftime, but Fremont extended its lead to 54-38 after three quarters to take control.

Guard Chris Ford and center Michael Tate led top-ranked Fremont with 17 and 16 points, respectively.

Marshall 68, Wilson 66--Forward Arvin Valle made two free throws with four seconds remaining in the second overtime to give the Barristers (19-6) the a City 3-A quarterfinal victory at Eagle Rock High.

Marshall’s Thanh Deip made a 12-foot jump shot with two seconds remaining in regulation to tie the score at 57 and send the game into overtime.

GIRLS

Washington 71, Fremont 34--The top-ranked Generals (22-4) jumped out to a 38-17 halftime lead and rolled in a City 4-A semifinal game at Gardena High.

Washington, the defending 4-A champion, was led by guard Charisse Sampson, who scored 21 points and had 17 rebounds.

Crenshaw 49, Van Nuys 45--The Wolves held the Cougars to two points in the fourth quarter but fell short in a City 4-A quarterfinal game at Van Nuys.

Trailing, 37-21, at halftime, Van Nuys used a zone defense in the second half to narrow the score to 47-45 on two JoAnne Harry free throws with 37 seconds to play.

Roosevelt 63, University 37--The Roughriders continued its surprising season with an easy home victory in the City 3-A semifinals.

Adriana Huerta led the Roosevelt (20-1) with 20 points.

Millikan 74, San Gabriel 64--Taniko Hilbert scored 26 points to lead Millikan (17-9) to a Division I-AA playoff victory at Millikan.

Chaminade 54, Banning 36--Maria Costa had 19 points and Jane Kim grabbed 20 rebounds for host Chaminade (16-9) in a Southern Section Division IV-AA game.

Banning finished the season 18-9.

Santa Clara 57, St. Matthias 35--Jennifer Gutierrez scored 16 points for host Santa Clara (12-13), which led, 27-12, at halftime of the Southern Section Division IV-AA game.
