Fresh off a 28-point victory in the Southern Section II-AA championship game, the Tustin High School basketball team wasn’t about to play a close one in the first round of the Southern California Regional Division II playoffs.

Brian Reider scored 16 points and David Beilstein added 15 as every player scored for top-seeded Tustin in a 91-49 victory over Visalia Redwood Tuesday night at Tustin.

Tustin (27-4) advanced to Thursday’s semifinals against San Pasqual, a 79-71 winner over Woodbridge in a first-round game.

Although the game was a blowout, it ended in controversy. The winning margin upset Visalia Coach Bob Vasilovich.

“I feel Tustin didn’t have to press when they were up 50 in the second half,” Vasilovich said. “Maybe it was a good show for the fans, but I didn’t like it. The game was won.”

Tustin Coach Tom McCluskey said he pulled his team’s full-court pressure defense in the second quarter. The Tillers led, 45-23, at halftime, and the winning margin was their biggest lead of the game.

“I knew he was mad,” McCluskey said. “But we didn’t press a second in the second half. We were man-to-man, half-court on defense. What am I supposed to do, tell our kids not to play hard?”

It was the second consecutive blowout for Tustin, which beat Riverside North, 70-42, in the section championship last Saturday. The Tillers have outscored their opponents, 161-91, in their past two games.

“We’re not into running up the score,” McCluskey said. “I’ve been in (Vasilovich’s) shoes before. I feel bad about it.”

McCluskey pulled all starters early in the fourth quarter, and all of Tustin’s 14 players scored.

Reider, Tustin’s 6-foot-6 center, scored at will inside in the first half. He held a three-inch height advantage over Brian Hyde, Redwood’s tallest starter.

The Tillers pumped the ball inside to Reider, who made his first five shots. He scored 10 points in the first half as the Tillers led, 45-23, at halftime.

“It was a fun game for us,” McCluskey said. “Redwood was outmanned, 10-1. They’re well coached. They were just outmanned. That’s why the game was the way it was.”

Thomas Clayton scored 13 points and Carnard Polk came off the bench to add seven in the fourth quarter for Tustin.

Sam Beckworth (19-9) led Redwood with 13 points.

McCluskey said he was concerned that his players might let down after the easy victory over J.W. North.

During a pregame talk, he gave them the extra incentive they needed.

“I tried to convince them by telling them that there were a few college scouts in the stands watching,” McCluskey said. “A couple of our players are being looked at. A player can help himself by playing well during the playoffs. I hope this game helped them.”
