PREP ROUNDUP : Mater Dei’s Godwin Shuts Out Huntington Beach in Softball

Amy Godwin pitched a three-hitter and struck out five as Mater Dei defeated Huntington Beach, 3-0, in a nonleague softball game Tuesday at Mater Dei.

Godwin also had a double and triple, drove in one and scored two of Mater Dei’s three runs in its season opener.

In other nonleague softball:

Savanna 1, Loara 0 (9 innings)--Leigh Sager pitched a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts and Kris Gallegly had an RBI single for host Savanna (2-0).

In nonleague boys’ swimming:

Mission Viejo 90, Poway 79--Eric Diehl led the host Diablos in their victory over the top-ranked team in the San Diego Section. Diehl won the 100-yard butterfly (51.56 seconds) and the 100 backstroke (52.74). He also anchored the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams. Felipe Delgado won the 50 free (21.64) and the 100 free (48.45) for Mission Viejo.

In nonleague golf:

El Toro 200, University 232--Brothers Joe and Ben Garner tied at two-over-par 38 for El Toro at the El Toro Marine Base Course.

In nonleague volleyball:

Huntington Beach 3, El Toro 0--Matt Taylor had 24 kills for host Huntington Beach (1-0) in a 15-10, 15-7, 15-12 victory.

Laguna Beach 3, Dana Hills 0--Paul Buss had eight blocks and 10 kills, Chris Seale had 11 kills, Chris Ballard had 10 kills and David Berney had 24 assists in Laguna Beach’s 15-1, 15-3, 15-11 season-opening victory at home.
