HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Squeeze Scores 2 Runs to Give Kennedy Win

Kennedy High scored two runs on a suicide squeeze with one out in the seventh inning to hand host Granada Hills a 6-5 loss in a North Valley League baseball opener Thursday.

John Davis walked to lead off the seventh, Jason Makahon singled, and both runners advanced on a ground out. Darrin McCall followed with a bunt that scored Davis and, when Granada Hills threw to first base to retire McCall, Makahon scampered home.

Robert Vasquez singled twice and Bryan Martin drove in two runs for Granada Hills (2-3, 0-1). Makahon had two hits for Kennedy (3-2, 1-0).

In other baseball games:

San Fernando 5, Cleveland 1--Jose Nunez was two for three with three runs batted in for San Fernando (3-2, 1-0) in a North Valley League game at Cleveland.

Rick Savala threw a six-hitter and improved to 2-1.

Sylmar 10, Grant 0--Jose Villafana struck out seven in an East Valley League opener at Grant.

Villafana (1-0) also had two hits. Rene Navarro had two hits and two RBIs for Sylmar (1-1, 1-0).

Taft 8, Reseda 4--John Soto hit a grand slam in a six-run fourth for Taft (1-0) in a West Valley League opener at Reseda.

Taft’s Sean Collins (1-0) struck out seven and Warren Stewart had two hits and scored twice. Juan Carlos Romero had a single and a triple for Reseda (0-1).

Franklin 12, Verdugo Hills 5--Stan Hessinger hit a three-run home run in the third for Verdugo Hills (0-1) and the Dons turned a 6-3-2 triple play in a Northern League game at home.

Birmingham 6, Van Nuys 3--Noah Kirshbaum allowed four hits in six innings and Corey Litwin picked up his second save for host Birmingham (2-2, 1-0) in a Mid-Valley League game.

Seth Rosenweig had two doubles for Birmingham. Mike Malkin added three hits.

Monroe 5, Canoga Park 3--Adrian Lovrich had 12 strikeouts and did not allow a walk for visiting Monroe in a Mid-Valley League opener.

Mark Alarado had two hits and scored two runs and Juan Navarro had two hits and two RBIs for Monroe. Darren Rivenbark had three hits and scored a run for Canoga Park.

Huntington Beach 9, Newbury Park 4--Robert Fick and Jeff Hook each had two hits for Newbury Park (1-3) in a Loara tournament game at Huntington Beach.

Highland Hall 18, Viewpoint 0--Three pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter and Tum Ratanatraiphob had two stolen bases to give him 91 in his Highland Hall career.

Oak Park 4, Calabasas 3--Mike Michaud’s double with two out in the seventh drove in the winning run for host Oak Park (2-0) in a nonleague game.

Jason Kane tied the score, 3-3, with a seventh-inning leadoff home run. Eric Kane followed with a single and advanced to second on a walk, setting up Michaud’s double.

SOFTBALL

Taft 12, Monroe 1--Julie Kawamoto doubled and pitched a five-hitter to lead Taft (1-0) in a nonleague game at Monroe (0-1).

Birmingham 3, Reseda 2--Robyn Kamisher and Lourdes Tirado each had two hits for host Birmingham (1-0) in a nonleague game.

Crescenta Valley 7, Rosemead 1--Stacy Atwood recorded 13 strikeouts and surrendered just one hit in her first start in a nonleague game for the Falcons (2-0) at Montrose Park.

La Reina 14, Santa Paula 1--Valerie Serpico was three for five and doubled twice and Amy Gussick added three hits and two RBIs for La Reina (1-0) in a nonleague game at Santa Paula.

Michelle St. Pierre, who lost a shutout on an unearned run, struck and five and did not walk a batter.

Bell-Jeff 8, Duarte 2--Lisa Hernandez and Carrie Breedlove combined to toss a one-hitter for Bell-Jeff (1-1) in a nonleague game at Duarte.

Antelope Valley Christian 47, Desert Christian 1--Becky Tidwell had five hits, scored five runs and drove in another for Antelope Valley Christian in a Heritage League opener.

Alemany 6, Burbank 1--Sophomore Tanya Ortiz, making her first career start, pitched a no-hitter for Alemany (2-0) and struck out six.

Krista Gomez had three hits, an RBI and scored a run and Angela Hallak and Lisa Landin each had two hits for host Alemany.

Louisville 11, Notre Dame 9--Erin Joyce (two RBIs) and Ashley Wire each had three hits and Paige Allocco had two for visiting Louisville (2-0) in a nonleague game.

Sylmar 4, Granada Hills 3--Visiting Sylmar (2-0) scored two runs on a throwing error in the top of the ninth to break a 2-2 tie in a nonleague game. Traci Hanna hit a two-run home run in the seventh to force extra innings.

Montclair Prep 23, Windward 0-- Dana Bennish was five for five with six RBIs and Laura Aboulafia added three hits and three RBIs for host Montclair Prep (2-0) in a nonleague game that was shortened to five innnings because of the 10-run rule.
