COLLEGE ROUNDUP : 5-Run 11th Inning Gives Pierce Win, 10-5

Pierce College scored five runs on a two-out rally in the 11th inning to defeat Cuesta, 10-5, Saturday in a Western State Conference baseball game at Cuesta.

Pierce (9-9, 2-3 in conference play) pounded out 19 hits, including 10 extra-base hits. Ricky Banuelos, Pat Houston and Joe Cascione each had four hits.

Louis Birdt (2-0), who relieved in the seventh, allowed two hits in 4 2/3 innings and struck out three.

Mission 7, Compton 5--Brad McGahan had two hits, including a two-run triple, to lead Mission (10-10, 2-1) in a Southern California Athletic Conference game at Compton.

Lazaro Campos and Richard Ortiz each had two hits for Mission.

Bakersfield 2, Moorpark 1--The host Raiders (1-3 in conference play), lost despite the pitching of John Boardman (1-1), who allowed four hits and one earned run in six innings.

SOFTBALL

Moorpark 6, Mt. San Antonio College 1--Kathy Morales (5-1) allowed five hits and Julie Coert hit a home run for Moorpark (11-3) in a nonconference game. Stevie Campbell, Tami Harp, and Gina Skinner each had two hits.

Cal Lutheran 6-5, Cal Baptist 0-0--Marjie Sievers pitched a two-hitter in the opener and Leslie Stevens followed with a five-hitter in the second game of the nonconference doubleheader at Cal Lutheran. The Regals are 6-0.

TRACK AND FIELD

Wes Dunston and Tyrone Jeffries of Cal State Northridge turned in their fastest performances of the season as the Matadors finished second in a triangular track and field meet against UCLA and host Azusa Pacific.

Dunston won the 100 with a wind-aided time of 10.50 seconds and placed second in the 200 in 21.25.

Jeffries placed first in the 110-meter high hurdles with a wind-aided 14.11 as Northridge totaled 69 points behind UCLA’s 93.

Azusa Pacific was third with 30. Northridge also finished second in the women’s meet, totaling 47 points. UCLA scored 91 points and Azusa Pacific was third with 28.
