COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Norville, Ferdin, Felix Dominate as OCC Defeats Golden West in Track

Orange Coast won 15 of 16 events to defeat Golden West, 122-21, in an Orange Empire Conference track and field meet Friday at Orange Coast.

Dave Norville won three events, and Miguel Ferdin and Myron Felix each won two for OCC. Norville won the 100 meters (11.1 seconds), the 200 (23.2) and the long jump with a leap of 21 feet 1 inch.

Ferdin won the 800 (2:01.9) and the 1,500 (4:15.1), and Felix took first in the 110 high hurdles (15.8) and the 400 intermediate hurdles (1:00.3).

Brian Hyatt was Golden West’s lone winner. He took first in the discus with a throw of 150-7.

In another Orange Empire Conference men’s track and field meet:

Riverside 86, Saddleback 36--Host Saddleback had only two individual winners. Gary Kirchhoff won the shotput with a throw of 51-7 1/2, and Damion Lewis won the 5,000 meters in 15:55 for the Gauchos.

In Orange Empire Conference women’s track and field:

Orange Coast 95, Golden West 32--Heidi Hasemann won three events, and Liz Rojas and Desiree Brock each won two for host Orange Coast. Hasemann took the 100 hurdles (17.4), the 400 hurdles (1:16.6) and the triple jump (31-9). Rojas won the 200 (29.2) and the 400 (1:04.8), and Brock won the 800 (2:40.7) and the 3,000 (12:46).

Riverside 73, Saddleback 63--Dejuanna Anderson won the javelin (105-10), and the high jump (4-8), was second in the triple jump and third in three other events for Saddleback. Hollie Cox was the other double-event winner for Saddleback, first in the shotput (35-3 1/2) and the discus (109-2).

Tonya Howell won the 100-meter hurdles (17.1), Erica Griffith took the 100 meters (13.2), Yvonne Lindrud won the 800 meters (2:31) and Kathy Honeywell won the 3,000 meters (12:04) for Saddleback.

In Orange Empire Conference baseball:

Riverside 6, Fullerton 5--Ray Cervantes drove in the tying run with a triple and scored the go-ahead run on a fielder’s choice in the eighth for host Riverside (18-6, 4-3). Fullerton, which lost its sixth consecutive game, led, 5-0, after five innings, but Riverside scored scored four in the sixth.

Pitcher Chris Johnson had two hits and three RBIs and went the distance, striking out 10 and walking five for Fullerton (15-11, 2-6).

The same teams play at noon today at Fullerton.

In the Golden West softball tournament:

Cypress 9, El Camino 0--Nikkanni Andrews had three hits including a home run for Cypress (20-6), which scored four runs in the sixth and five more in the seventh. Stephanie Hill and Tricia Barr also had home runs for Cypress, which plays Palomar at 9 a.m. today.

Laura Corson (15-4) pitched two innings for the victory. Cypress had defeated Napa Valley, 6-3, earlier.

Golden West 3, Pasadena 2--Stephanie Viola pitched a two-hitter and had an RBI double for Golden West (9-6). Golden West lost to Sierra, 4-3, earlier in the day.

Golden West’s Pam Fogg had not allowed an earned run in 24 consecutive innings before giving up four in the seventh.

In the men’s and women’s swimming Cuesta Invitational:

Orange Coast men’s and women’s teams led after the first of two days. The OCC men’s team has 241 1/2 points with DeAnza and Diablo Valley tied for second at 116. Golden West is in sixth with 95.

Andreas Roestenberg won the mile in 16:07.54 for OCC. Russ Bard (2:01.65) and Nate Julson (2:02.35) were first and second in the 200-yard individual medley.

Kim Stansfield won the three-meter diving competition with 423.55 points for Orange Coast, which has 140 3/4 points. Golden West (101) is second and Cuesta (97) is third.

In Orange Empire Conference golf:

Orange Coast won the four-team match at Lake San Marcos County Club with a 385 strokes. OCC’s Chris Lowry and Scott McLeod tied for first with three-over 75. Host Palomar (402) was second, Fullerton (420) third and San Diego City (457) fourth.
