COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Orange Coast Men, Women Win Invitation Swim Meet

Orange Coast College, which has one of the best swimming programs in the state, dominated the men’s and women’s competition at the Cuesta Invitational Saturday in San Luis Obispo.

OCC had 787 1/2 points to win the men’s title. Diablo Valley (408 1/2) was a distant second and Golden West (368) third. The OCC women won with 521 3/4 points. Golden West (405) was second and Cuesta (395) third.

Freshman Andreas Roestenberg won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:24.00 and the 200 freestyle (1:42.90) Saturday. He won the mile Friday to make him the only triple winner in a meet that featured 581 competitors.

Paul Barrera won the 200 butterfly (1:56.78), and OCC won the 400 and the 800 freestyle relays. OCC won all five relay races in the meet.

Christine Williams won the 100 freestyle (55.00) and Mandy Williams took the 200 freestyle (1:59.47) for the OCC women’s team.

In the Mt. San Antonio Invitational men’s swimming meet:

Saddleback wins--Saddleback’s Jason Armstrong won the 500 freestyle in 5:45 as the Gauchos won the the title with 435 points.

Saddleback also won the 400 medley relay in 3:47.43. Takanori Nozaki, Ron Johnson, Eric Bird, and Don Flood made up the team.

Bird also won the 100 butterfly (54.71).

In the Mt. San Antonio Invitational women’s swimming meet:

Saddleback finished third--Emilie Povlovich scored 48 points in seven events as Saddleback had 358 points. San Diego Mesa won the meet with 474 points and Palomar (385) was second.

In the Golden West softball tournament:

Cypress 2, Orange Coast 0--Cypress advanced to today’s semifinal round with the victory over Orange Empire Conference rival OCC.

Cypress had lost to Palomar, 1-0, and defeated Cerritos, 6-3, earlier.

In the semifinals at 10 a.m. at Golden West, Cypress plays Central Arizona and Chabot plays Palomar. The championship is scheduled for noon.

Orange Coast 4, Golden West 1--Orange Coast rallied for three runs in the seventh to eliminate Golden West in the round of 16. Becky Toler had an RBI single to put OCC ahead, 2-1. Tina Fuata followed with a two-run double.

Kristin Heizer (4-2) pitched a three-hitter.
