LA PALMA : Garage Water Heater Blamed in Home Fire

Share

A garage water heater that apparently ignited hundreds of stuffed animals was blamed for a blaze early Sunday that badly damaged a home and led to minor injuries to two firefighters.

Firefighters from five county engines took 55 minutes to control the blaze at 7622 Carbon Circle after it started at 1:26 a.m. Sunday.

“The entire house appeared to be pretty well destroyed,” said County Fire Department Capt. Dan Young. “There was certainly damage throughout and the better part of the house was well involved by the time fire crews arrived.”

Four unidentified occupants of the home escaped unharmed. One firefighter suffered smoke inhalation and another a foot wound caused by a nail. Both were treated and released.

The fire caused an estimated $100,000 damage, Young said.

“Right now our suspicions are that it started in the garage from combustible materials stored too close to a water heater,” Young said.

The materials appeared to be hundreds of stuffed animals kept in the garage as part of a retail distribution business, he said.
