After Estancia lost to Pomona in the Southern Section III-AA title game early this month, Haas pursued victories with renewed vigor. “I started focusing better in the state playoffs,” he said. “After we lost to Pomona, I wanted to avenge that and get a state championship.” Saturday, Haas scored a game-high 27 points in the Eagles’ 82-72 victory over Fremont Washington in the State Division III championship game. Haas made only two of seven shots in the first half, but had 20 points in the second half when Washington was threatening. During one stretch he made three consecutive three-point baskets, although one was recorded as a two-pointer, and he scored 11 points in the fourth quarter. “My point guard Paul (McDaniels) was giving me the ball in all the key spots and I was coming through,” Haas said. Estancia Coach Tim O’Brien, who suspended Haas for a game early in the season for breaking the team’s dress code, said Haas had greater intensity in the postseason. “It’s just been an up and down year for him, but he wound up on top,” O’Brien said.

Other top performers:

Eric Olson, who had 88 assists in Capistrano Valley’s five-game volleyball victory over University and 59 in the Cougars’ four-game victory over Torrey Pines.

Mark Parlin, who had marks of 62-10 in the shotput and 165-7 in the discus for Esperanza in the Katella Relays.
