HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Simi Valley Downs Camarillo

Simi Valley High used 12 hits to pound Camarillo, 15-2, Tuesday at Simi Valley in a Marmonte League baseball opener.

The Pioneers were led by Brian Vasey (2-0), who pitched four innings and went three for four with four runs scored and one run batted in. Tyler Nelson slammed a three-run homer in the fourth inning for Simi Valley (6-1) and finished with two hits and four RBIs.

Simi Valley’s James Manzi also contributed, going two for two with two walks and four RBIs.

The game was moved up a day to accommodate Simi Valley, which will leave on Friday for a tournament in Phoenix. The Pioneers’ scheduled game Friday against Newbury Park has been moved to Thursday.

In other baseball games:

Glendale 12, Pasadena 2--Lance Evans (1-0) threw a one-hitter and struck out five to lead the Dynamiters in a Pacific League game at home.

Brenden Barrett and Keith Hopkins each had two hits and Ryan Chapman hit a two-run triple in a three-run fourth for Glendale (2-1, 1-1).

Burbank 7, Hart 3--Burbank scored five runs in the fourth, helped by three Hart errors, to post a Foothill League win at Hart.

Burbank (4-2, 2-0 in league play) was paced by Shad Ortiz with two hits and two runs scored. Ozzie Areu also had two hits for the Bulldogs. Shane O’Brien (2-1) took the loss for Hart (4-3, 1-1).

Alhambra 6, Burroughs 2--Bobby Sherwood had two hits and Mike Medina hit a solo home run for host Burroughs (1-6, 0-2) in a Foothill League game.

Kennedy 9, Reseda 1--Mike McMullen (3-1) struck out 11 batters and walked none en route to a four-hitter in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Kennedy.

Kennedy’s Troy Bourne went two for four with three runs scored and two RBIs. Jeff Tagliaferri also had two hits and two RBIs for the Golden Cougars. Kennedy improved to 5-3, 3-1 in conference.

Poly 3, Birmingham 2--Marlon McKinney’s bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh scored Juan Chavira with the winning run in an East Valley League game.

Robert Barron came on in the sixth to pick up the win in relief for Poly (7-1, 4-0).

Granada Hills 6, Taft 3--Heath McElwee went four for four with an RBI and Sam Voita produced two doubles and an RBI for Granada Hills in a Northwest Valley Conference game at home.

Bryan Martin (2-0) allowed two hits through four innings and finished with a seven-hitter and five strikeouts.

Faith Baptist 6, Murphy 4--Pitcher Darren Wyre provided punch from the mound and the plate in a nonleague game at home. Wyre (1-0) surrendered only one hit before being relieved in the fifth. He also delivered two two-run home runs and a single for Faith Baptist (2-2).

SOFTBALL

Reseda 13, Manual Arts 4--Maria Estrada went three for three with four RBIs and Kathy Egbert was three for four with three RBIs as Reseda romped in a nonleague game at Manual Arts.

Hoover 2, Burroughs 0--Sophomore Nancy Evans (4-1) struck out nine and scattered three hits in a nonleague game. Evans also went two for three and scored a run for Hoover (4-1).

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Calabasas d. Channel Islands, 15-6, 15-12, 9-15, 15-11--Cameron LaBrache had 19 kills for Calabasas (4-3) in a nonleague match at Calabasas. Andrew McFadden had five aces and three solo blocks and Mike Barnbaum added two aces off jump serve.

Notre Dame d. Hart, 15-13, 15-8, 15-11--Steve Card had 18 kills and three service aces for Notre Dame, which won for the sixth consecutive time in a nonleague match. Morgan Hay added nine kills for Notre Dame (6-1).

Royal d. Camarillo, 15-2, 15-7, 15-5--Kevin Hambly had 11 kills and Carl Weschta added eight kills for host Royal (4-1, 3-0) in a Marmonte League match.

Crespi d. Chaminade, 15-4, 15-10, 15-11--Frank Romano had 22 kills and Tom Black added 12 kills for Crespi (4-1, 2-1) in a Mission League match at Chaminade.
