Lisa McNamee, coach of the Estancia High School girls’ basketball team, still is ecstatic about the season her team had.

“One of our goals was to win league and another was to make it to the (Southern Section) finals. We were one game short, but I was really pleased,” said McNamee, The Times’ 1991 coach of the year. “This is by far the best year that I’ve ever had as a coach and the neatest group of girls I’ve ever coached.”

McNamee, 29, guided Estancia (25-2) to the Pacific Coast League title with a 10-0 record and to the section Division III-AA semifinals, where the Eagles lost to Lompoc, 65-55. The team, which finished ranked second in the county behind State champion Brea-Olinda, also won the Beverly Hills and Bolsa Grande tournaments, and was runner-up in the Marina tournament.

Until the loss to Lompoc, the Eagles had won 13 consecutive games. Their only loss until then had been to Lakewood, 58-47, in the championship game of the Marina tournament.

McNamee has a 95-51 record in six seasons at Estancia, which won the Sea View League championship in 1987-88 and has been to the Southern Section playoffs the past five years. Estancia moved to the PCL this season.

But McNamee was quick to note neither she nor the players were the only reasons for Estancia’s success this season.

“The team is where it is today and I am where I am today because of my assistant coaches, Vickie Simpson and Lisa Stevens,” McNamee said. “I have the head coaching position, but it’s really a three-person coaching team.”

McNamee was a standout guard at Estancia and an all-section pick her senior year in 1980. She played one year at San Diego State before suffering a career-ending knee injury.

McNamee, who works in the acquisitions department of an Irvine real estate firm, also attended the University of San Diego, from which she earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology.

She recently was named coach of the South team for the 12th Orange County all-star game scheduled for April 27 at Saddleback College. She played in the game in 1980 and was an assistant coach to former Woodbridge Coach Eric Bangs in the 1988 game and to Tustin Coach Rick Falk last year.

McNamee said she’s looking forward to this year’s game.

“I think it’s an excellent opportunity for the seniors to showcase their talent,” McNamee said. “It’s a nice chance for some of the seniors who were overlooked by the colleges to get a second look.”
