3 Sophomores on Southeast All-Star Boys; Lynwood's Captain Is Player of Year

Three sophomores have made The Times' 1991 Southeast Prep Boys All-Star Basketball Team, while a senior, Juaquin Hawkins of Lynwood, is the Player of the Year.

Hawkins averaged 15 points for the Knights and made the all-Southeast team for the second consecutive season.

The sophomores on the team, with a combined average of 17 points and seven rebounds a game, are Michael O'Quinn of Pius X, and Charles O'Bannon and Avondre Jones of Artesia.

Other repeaters on the team are DeAndre Austin of Artesia and Ruben Oronoz of Whittier Christian.

Wayne Merino of Artesia, who led the Pioneers to their second CIF Southern Section championship in a row, is Coach of the Year.

A look at the Southeast team:

Juaquin Hawkins, Lynwood--This 6-6 senior captained the Knights and averaged 15 points and 11 rebounds. Hard to guard because of his quickness, the Player of the Year is headed for Cal State Long Beach.

Jamal Lawrence, Lynwood--Not only does the 6-1 Lawrence have a 38-inch vertical leap, but he also is an outside shooter who hit 47% from three-point territory. The junior averaged 20.1 points and made the all-San Gabriel Valley League team.

Charles O'Bannon, Artesia--A 6-5 sophomore, O'Bannon averaged 15 points and six rebounds, and had 55 steals for the II-A champion Pioneers. "He's a great passer and a good defender," said Merino. "He has the ingredients to become a big-time player." O'Bannon's older brother, Ed, who was an all-American at Artesia, is now at UCLA.

DeAndre Austin, Artesia--A four-year starter who moved from off-guard to point guard this season, Austin was the main reason for the Pioneers' success. The most valuable player of the Suburban League, he averaged 13 points and three assists, and had 65 steals.

Avondre Jones, Artesia--The 6-10 all-league sophomore blocked 80 shots and also averaged 13 points and seven rebounds. "He can be about as good as he wants to be," Merino said.

Glen Huggins, La Serna--The MVP of the Whitmont League, Huggins, a 6-2 senior, averaged 18 points and five rebounds. He shot 41% from three-point territory and 56% inside it.

Michael O'Quinn, Pius X--"He can do a lot of things with the ball," said Pius X Coach Rob Orellana. What the sophomore did best was score, averaging 23.5 points. He also averaged almost eight rebounds and was the MVP of the Camino Real League.

Dashon Quiette, St. John Bosco--A good shooter and ball handler, Quiette averaged 20 points and 3.7 assists for the Braves and made the all-Angelus League team. "He has a tremendous desire to succeed," Bosco Coach Tim Haley said.

Ruben Oronoz, Whittier Christian--The co-MVP of the Olympic League, Oronoz averaged 20.4 points and 11.7 rebounds. The Heralds' leader, he worked hard outside of practice to get better, said his coach, Bob Brown.

Todd Van Otterloo, Valley Christian--A 6-5 senior, he averaged 23.2 points for the Crusaders. He is going to UCLA and intends to be a doctor.
