All-Stars Demonstrating Notable Moves Off the Court as Well

TIMES STAFF WRITER

It is not unusual for members of a high school all-star team to play elsewhere their next season because frequently they are seniors. But this year’s All-Valley basketball teams, selected by Times sportswriters, will suffer losses not associated with graduation.

All 10 first-team members on last year’s boys’ team were seniors, and seven of the 10 selected to the 1990-91 boys’ team are 12th-graders who are expected to play in college next season. Leading the list is player of the year Jerry Allen, who emerged from a nondescript junior season to become the area’s most well-rounded player. The Granada Hills High senior guard averaged 22.3 points, 13.5 rebounds and 5.9 assists and is leaning toward playing at Ventura College next winter.

But the area also is bidding farewell to Brandon Martin of Cleveland, a high-scoring swingman who was expected to lead a strong senior class in the area next season. Martin likely will earn all-star honors next season but he won’t make the All-Valley team because he has left Cleveland and the Valley.

Citing differences with Cleveland Coach Kevin Crider, Martin has enrolled at Washington and will play for the Generals next season.

“This is the best move for me,” Martin has said. “I hope Washington can provide the things I need.”

The area also is losing its top two girls’ players from this year’s team. Jacinda Sweet, a senior guard who led North Hollywood to a 23-5 record, is taking her multifaceted game to Arizona, which she will attend on scholarship. But Anjanette Dionne, Hart’s exceptional junior point guard, also plans to play next season out of the area.

Shortly after leading Hart to a 22-6 record and a third consecutive Foothill League title, Dionne left the Santa Clarita Valley to join her parents in Oregon. Dionne, the girls’ player of the year, enrolled at Central Linn High in Halsey, where she intends to complete her high school career.

“I will miss people here,” Dionne has said. “I know that (Hart Coach Dave) Munroe would do anything to get me to stay, but I have to decide what’s best for me.”

Although there is a remote chance Dionne could return to Hart for her senior season, some of the area’s top underclassmen probably hope she stays in the north. With Dionne out of the picture, someone else gets a crack at player-of-the-year honors. Dionne seemed a cinch to claim her third consecutive player-of-the-year award next season and achieve an area first: an MVP hat trick.

She averaged 20.2 points, 4.5 rebounds and 6.1 assists in 1990-91, nearly duplicating her numbers from the season before. As a sophomore, she averaged 23.3 points and 5.0 assists.

Dionne leaves behind a crowded field of contenders for next season’s top award among the girls. In another departure from form, only three of the girls’ All-Valley selections are seniors.

Palmdale, which has won three consecutive Golden League titles and compiled a 28-2 league record during that stretch, placed two sophomores on the team. Teammates Latisha Beam and Kim Schielke led Palmdale to a 23-6 record in 1990-91.
