HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : McKinney’s Single Again Lifts Poly

Two days later, same player, same teams, similar situation. The bad news for Birmingham High: same result.

Poly shortstop Marlon McKinney singled home the winning run in the seventh inning for the second time in three days to lead the Parrots to a 4-3 victory Thursday in a Valley Pac-8 Conference baseball game at Birmingham.

With the score tied, 3-3, Jonathan Campbell (three hits) led off the seventh with a single and stole second. After Campbell took third on a ground out, McKinney singled him home with a shot into left field.

In Poly’s 3-2 victory over Birmingham on Tuesday, McKinney singled to left to drive in the winning run with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh. Poly improved to 8-1, 4-0 in league play.

Mike Belasco hit a three-run homer for Birmingham (3-6, 2-3).

In other baseball games:

Channel Islands 15, Agoura 8--Johny Olivares, Channel Islands’ freshman leadoff hitter, had two hits and three runs batted in in a Marmonte League opener at Channel Islands.

Olivares has reached base safely in nine of his past 10 plate appearances. Jacob Cruz and Ray Rangel both homered and doubled for Channel Islands (5-0), and Angel Aragon (3-0) picked up the win.

Simi Valley 20, Newbury Park 1--The Pioneers (7-1, 2-0) erupted for 16 hits, including three home runs, to beat Newbury Park (2-7, 0-1) in a Marmonte League game at Simi Valley.

Sophomore right-hander Bill Treadway (3-0) had his no-hit bid soured in the seventh by Robert Fick, who singled up the middle to start the inning. Treadway finished with a two-hitter.

Brian Vasey went three for four with a three-run home run in the second. Aaron Fischer’s home run brought in two more in the fourth, and James Manzi hit a three-run shot in the sixth.

Rio Mesa 4, Chaminade 2--Jeff Howatt (2-0) and Mike Mitchell combined on a no-hitter to beat Chaminade (3-5) in a Westside tournament game at Rio Mesa.

Dmitri Young homered and singled and Sam Garcia had two hits for Rio Mesa (5-1).

Taft 9, Granada Hills 0--Nathan Voytek (2-1) tossed his second shutout--a four-hit performance--in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Taft. Stacy Kleiner and Matt Allison each had three hits.

Sylmar 6, Monroe 1--Jose Villafana (2-1) threw a five-hitter, struck out seven and walked one for the Spartans (5-3, 3-1) in the Valley Pac-8 Conferance game at Monroe. Villafana has not allowed an earned run in 21 innings. Dereck Ornelas hit a double and a triple. Rene Navarro hit a two-run single.

Grant 9, Canoga Park 0--Holvik Castro (2-3) pitched a two-hitter and struck out nine for host Grant in the Valley-Pac 8 Conference game. Grant scored all of its runs in the third. Jose Velasquez and Petur Georgesson each had two RBIs.

North Hollywood 5, Van Nuys 2--Mike Lewis had two hits, two runs, two RBIs and two stolen bases to lead North Hollywood in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game. Pedro Campana (2-2) struck out seven for the Huskies (2-4, 1-3).

Verdugo Hills 3, Belmont 0--Steve Hernandez pitched a three-hitter as visiting Verdugo Hills posted its first victory in the Northern League game.

SOFTBALL

Saugus 1, Hart 0--Carrie Brown scored on a passed ball with two out in the second to pace the Centurions in a nonleague upset.

Thousand Oaks 3, Newbury Park 1--Sophomore right-hander Carrie Russell (4-2) struck out five and walked none in a Marmonte League victory at Thousand Oaks.

Angie Nau, Nikki Ochoa and Dani Burns all had an RBI for Thousand Oaks (4-2, 2-0).

Agoura 1, Westlake 0--Michelle Bunch doubled home the winning run for Agoura in the fifth inning of a Marmonte League game.

Granada Hills 5, Taft 0--Granada Hills’ Brandy Brennan struck out 15 and allowed one hit in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

Canyon 6, Alemany 5--Marianne Winchester (3-2) earned the victory for visiting Canyon (5-3) in a nonleague game. Canyon’s Keri Lemasters was three for four, and Syna Schuster had two hits.

Sylmar 31, Poly 0--Ruby Gonzalez (4-0) threw a no-hitter for visiting Sylmar (6-0, 1-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game, and Judy Lara had two doubles.
