COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Beck’s 3-Hitter Lifts Master’s to Its 5th Win in a Row, 6-0

Chris Beck, a freshman right-hander, pitched a three-hitter to lead The Master’s College to a 6-0 victory over host Biola in an NAIA District 3 game Friday.

Beck’s second shutout of the season gave the Mustangs their fifth consecutive victory.

Beck (5-1) struck out seven, walked three and held Biola to its lowest hit total of the season. His teammates got to Biola ace Eric Pollom (5-1) in a four-run fifth inning.

With Master’s leading, 1-0, in the fifth, Craig Johnson had a one-out, two-run, bases-loaded single, and Chad Hankinson followed with a two-out single that scored two more runs.

Johnson, Hankinson and E. J. Pape had two hits each for Master’s (12-7, 6-4 in district play).

In another baseball game:

East Los Angeles 3, Mission 2 (11 innings)--Mission was its worst enemy in losing its fourth consecutive Southern California Athletic Conference game.

East L. A. scored its first run on a passed ball and East L. A. tied the score, 2-2, with a bases-loaded walk in the eighth and scored the winning run after an error.

Mission reliever Eric Duncan (2-3) walked the first batter he faced in the 11th and then tried to pick him off. First baseman Lazaro Campos made an error on the throw, allowing the runner to advance to third. He later scores on a base hit.

Brad McGahan hit a solo home run in the fourth to break a string of 24 consecutive scoreless innings for Mission (10-14, 2-5). Mission took a 2-1 lead in the fifth when Tom Gibson scored from third on a double steal.

SOFTBALL

Moorpark 9, Pierce 6--Gina Skinner (three runs batted in), Tami Harp and Melissa Maples each had two hits for Moorpark in the Western State Conference game at Pierce.

Kathy Morales (8-1), who came on in relief after 1 1/3 innings, gave up four hits and did not allow an earned run to pick up the win. Moorpark (14-3, 2-0) has won four consecutive games. Tanya Scott had two hits for Pierce (5-12, 0-3).

Canyons 1, Ventura 0--Kelly Kepplinger tripled with one out in the fourth inning to drive in Jeanine Swanson with the winning run in the WSC game at Canyons. Right-hander Melanie Howard (7-9) struck out two and did not allow a walk in a complete game victory.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Grossmont d. Canyons, 15-4, 15-9, 15-7--Eric Henkels had 19 kills for host Canyons and teammate Rick Phillips added 10, but the Cougars fell in the Western State Conference match.
