COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Boyd’s Pitching, Hitting Help the Titans Advance

Tiffany Boyd pitched a three-hitter and hit a run-scoring double as Cal State Fullerton defeated Cal State Northridge, 3-0, in a quarterfinal game of the PONY softball tournament at Cal State Fullerton Saturday.

Boyd (16-2) won her sixth consecutive game, her third in the tournament and her seventh shutout. It was the 10th consecutive victory for seventh-ranked Fullerton, which improved to 28-7.

In another championship bracket game, former Edison standout Terry Carpenter (13-0) pitched a two-hitter as Fresno State defeated Colorado State, 4-0. Fresno State has won 16 consecutive games.

In nonconference baseball:

Cal State Northridge 5, UC Irvine 4--UC Irvine led, 4-2, going into the bottom of seventh inning when Andy Hodgins, Mike Sims and Craig Clayton hit consecutive singles to load the bases for Cal State Northridge (21-9). One out later, Scott Sharts was walked by Irvine starter David Bladow to score one run, Greg Shockey was hit by reliever Steve May to force in another and May walked Denny Vigo for the winning run.

Irvine (13-15), which stranded 12 runners, had the bases loaded in the ninth and could not get a run. In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Southern California College 6-1, Cal Baptist 4-0--Sean Maharg had three hits and scored three times, Donny Harrell and Justin Pysar each had three hits and Frank Howell had two hits and two RBIs in the first game. In the second game, John Mounce doubled to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning, went to third on Harrell’s infield hit and scored on Keith Laszlo’s sacrifice fly to right for SCC (14-10, 6-2). SCC’s Mike Castle threw a three-hitter for his second shutout.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 7, Texas Tech 2--UC Irvine (11-4 and ranked 20th in the nation) swept singles to defeat visiting Texas Tech (12-5). Mike Roberts defeated Fabio Walker, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, in No.1 singles for Irvine.

In the Bakersfield softball tournament:

Chapman 6, Chico State 2--Cheri Schreck (12-3) pitched a three-hitter, allowing two walks and striking out six for Chapman. Sandy Olivas hit her 10th home run, walked three times and scored twice, and Christina Webb had three hits and one RBI for Chapman.

Chapman 3, Cal State Bakersfield 1--Jackie Blake (13-1) struck out four and walked two and Laura Papadakis had a two-run single in the fourth for Chapman (25-4).
