PREP ROUNDUP : Smith’s No-Hitter Gives Irvine Win

Rebecca Smith pitched a no-hitter and Irvine defeated University, 12-0, in a nonleague softball game Tuesday at Heritage Park in Irvine.

It was the first no-hitter for Smith (4-1), a sophomore right-hander who struck out seven. Karissa Mieth had two hits, including a bases-empty home run in the first inning, and three RBIs for Irvine (13-2).

In other nonleague softball:

La Habra 1, El Modena 0--Danielle Ortega pitched a two-hitter for host La Habra (10-2). Stefanie Bakke had a one-out RBI single in the seventh for La Habra.

Brea-Olinda 5, Orange 0--Gena Tuso and Andrea Schuette combined for a no-hitter for Brea-Olinda (5-6).

In Garden Grove League softball:

Pacifica 4, Santiago 0--Jennifer Surface pitched a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts for host Pacifica (6-6, 2-1).

Kennedy 9, Bolsa Grande 0--Danielle McLeod had three hits, including a three-run home run in the sixth inning, for visiting Kennedy (11-1, 3-0). Cheryl Longeway (11-1) allowed one hit and struck out six in five innings.

Garden Grove 10, Los Amigos 1--Duffy White (1-0) struck out nine and allowed one hit in 4 2/3 innings of relief for host Garden Grove (8-4, 3-0). Michelle Cash hit a three-run home run.

Rancho Alamitos 3, La Quinta 2--Amberr DeWees drove in the tying and winning runs with a triple in the sixth inning to cap a three-run rally for host Rancho Alamitos (5-8, 2-1). Destiny Mollison allowed three hits and struck out 10.

In Sunset League softball:

Huntington Beach 4, Fountain Valley 1--Host Huntington Beach (5-8, 1-0) scored three runs in the third on RBI singles by Shanen Kreipl and April Crosby and an RBI fielder’s choice by Shelley Nelson. Rae Rice (5-1) took the loss for Fountain Valley (9-2, 2-1).

Westminster 5, Ocean View 3--Karie Davies had a two-run single in the sixth inning to give host Westminster (9-4, 2-0) a 5-2 lead.

In Sea View League boys’ track and field:

Newport Harbor 69, Corona del Mar 67--Mike Hancock ran a 50.9-second anchor leg in the 1,600-meter relay to help Newport Harbor defeat Corona del Mar in a dual meet for the first time since 1980. Hancock also won the 800 (1:58.9).

Mike Busch, who also ran on Newport Harbor’s 1,600-relay team, won the 110 high hurdles (15.7) and the 300 intermediate hurdles (41.8) for the Sailors.

In Orange League golf:

Western 192, Valencia 199--Tiger Woods shot one-under 33 for Western (4-1-1, 1-0) at Dad Miller.

In Sunset League golf:

Marina 188, Westminster 228--Jason Stackhouse shot one-over 36 for Marina (5-0, 1-0) at Meadowlark.

In South Coast League golf:

El Toro 196, Irvine 206--Joe Garner shot even-par 36 for El Toro (10-2, 4-1) at Rancho San Joaquin.

In Sunset League boys’ tennis:

Fountain Valley 10, Huntington Beach 8--Eddie Weise swept at singles, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0, for visiting Fountain Valley (10-2, 6-0).

In Freeway League tennis:

Buena Park 10, La Habra 8--Taku Kawai and Ken Tran swept at No. 1 doubles for host Buena Park (1-1 in league).

In Sea View League boys’ volleyball:

Woodbridge 3, Newport Harbor 1--Host Woodbridge (5-1, 1-0), the fourth-ranked team in Orange County, won, 15-6, 15-8, 11-15, 15-10. Newport Harbor (4-3, 0-1) is ranked seventh.

University 3, Tustin 2--Zolti Csanyi had 28 kills and 29 assists as visiting University (3-2, 1-0) won, 12-15, 15-7, 11-15, 15-6, 15-3.

Corona del Mar 3, Saddleback 1--Doug Hesse had 11 kills in visiting Corona del Mar’s (1-3, 1-0) 15-6, 13-15, 15-8, 15-3 victory.

In South Coast League boys’ volleyball:

Irvine 3, Mission Viejo 0--Chris Swanner had 17 kills as host Irvine (6-1, 1-0) won, 15-12, 15-6, 15-6.
