HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Granite Hills Halts Grossmont’s Win Streak

Granite Hills broke Grossmont’s 24-game winning streak Thursday by defeating the Foothillers, 8-7, in six innings after the game was called because of darkness.

No. 1 Grossmont now is 10-1; Granite Hills is 4-3-1.

Trailing 6-7 in the bottom of the sixth, Granite Hills’ Mike Smith reached base on a single. After Ryan O’Coyne walked, Grossmont’s Jason Eskridge relieved Ryan Wheeler and walked Tom Fordham to load the bases with no outs. Eskridge then struck out two before walking Pat Bowers and forcing in Smith for the tying run. Josh Gast was walked to force in O’Coyne for the winning run.

“We’re real happy we were the ones to end their streak,” Granite Hills Coach Gordon Thompson said.

In other nonleague games:

Monte Vista 9, West Hills 1--Sophomore J.J. Laub went two for two with three RBIs for Monte Vista (6-2). Also for Monarchs, Shane Davidson two for three with a triple and a double with two RBIs and Jeremy Lipsey went two for three with two RBIs.

Helix 9, El Cajon Valley 6--Terry Carter went three for four with two RBIs and two runs scored including a solo homer in the second inning for Helix (7-4).

Imperial 12, Bishop’s 4--Sophomore Mark McGinnis was three for four and Darren Ross was two for three with three RBIs to lead Imperial (6-2-1). Bishop’s fell to 1-5.

Avocado League

San Marcos 5, Ramona 2--Justin Woodard hit a solo home run for San Marcos.

San Pasqual 4, Rancho Bernardo 1--The Golden Eagles capitalized on Rancho Bernardo’s eight errors to improve to 5-5, 2-0.

Escondido 9, Carlsbad 6--Sophomore left-hander Mike Frank limited the Lancers to two runs over the final four innings and got the victory in relief.

Oceanside 11, El Camino 8--Paul Edwards went three for three with two RBIs for Oceanside (3-8, 1-1). Also for Oceanside Carl Mathis hit a double and triple with two RBIs and Glen Brier hit a single and a double with four RBIs. El Camino is now 1-7, 0-2.

Palomar League

Mt. Carmel 14, San Dieguito 2--Eric Dockery singled and doubled, scored two runs and drove in two others in Mt. Carmel’s 10-run third. Other Mt. Carmel players with multiple hits included: Chris Chavez, who went two for four with three RBIs; Andy Owen, who went two for three with two RBIs and Travis Prentice, who went two for three with two RBIs.

Fallbrook 4, Orange Glen 0--Matt Dunlap broke the ice with a three-run double in the third as Fallbrook improved to 7-2, 2-0. Orange Glen fell to 8-2, 1-1.

Poway 9, Torrey Pines 2--Down 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Poway tied the score on a two-run homer from Donny Jones. It was one of three homers in the game. Poway’s Chris Jervis and Torrey Pines’ Jason Withrow hit solo shots. Poway pitcher Scott Pitterington struck out seven in his first complete game of the season.

Vista 2, Rancho Buena Vista 1--Aaron Rounsifer went two for four and Rodney DeLeon struck out six in pitching a complete game.

City Conference Tournament

Group A

Mission Bay 3, Coronado 0--Junior left-hander Manny Castillo pitched a two-hitter, striking out five and walking four as the Bucs (8-3) won their fifth consecutive game. Mission Bay will host Lincoln in the semifinals today at 10:30 a.m. Castillo, a transfer from Morse, lifted his record to 3-0 with his first complete game. Jason Enomoto stole two bases, scored twice and drove in a run. Coronado is 3-6.

Point Loma 4, Hoover 3--With one out in the bottom of the 10th, Point Loma’s James Crosley started what turned out to be the winning rally inconspicuously enough--he walked. Corey Keeling then took his turn at bat and tripled to left-center as Point Loma improved to 6-7.

Group B

St. Augustine 17, Lincoln 0--In his first varsity start, sophomore Javier Pamus (1-0) went the distance and struck out four, allowed four hits, and walked none for St. Augustine (6-5). The Saints scored nine runs in the second inning to take an 11-0 lead. There is a 10-run rule in the tournament but at least five innings must be played. After walks drove in the Saints first two runs of the second inning, Roger Alvarez hit a two-run double. Scattered singles drove in the Saints other five runs in that inning.

Lincoln, which fell to 5-6, will play Mission Bay today.

Madison 6, University City 4--Robi Hoffman hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning to clinch the victory for Madison (3-8).

Group C

Kearny 9, San Diego 7--Eddie Feistel went two for four with a double and two RBIs and Aaron Springer went three for four with a double four RBIs for Kearny (3-6-1). San Diego is now 9-4-1.

Mira Mesa 9, La Jolla 2--Frank Edsall had a three-run double as Mira Mesa improved to 12-2-1.

Group D

USDHS 18, Marian 7--Eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning clinched the victory for USDHS and ended the game because of the 10-run rule.

Crawford 4, Serra 3--Johnny Verdin, who went two for three, hit the game winning RBI in the bottom of the seventh for Crawford (4-8). Serra is now 10-4-1.

San Pasqual 7, Rancho Bernardo 0--Senior Trilbe Carson (1-0) pitched a no-hitter in a complete game for San Pasqual (6-4, 1-1).
