First Smog Warning in New Category Issued
The South Coast Air Quality Management District on Friday issued its first “health advisory,” a new warning triggered at a lower level than Stage I alerts. Ozone reached .15 parts per million, 138 on the Pollutant Standard Index, in Pasadena, Burbank, Glendora, Newhall and West Los Angeles.
The standard was established by the state Air Resources Board in September, reflecting new studies showing that healthy adults who exercise vigorously and inhale large amounts of pollution can be vulnerable to the harmful effects of smog at lower thresholds. During a health advisory, the AQMD recommends curtailing vigorous activities outdoors.
