Literacy Volunteers Graduate

Thirty-two students from Huntington Beach Library’s Adult Literacy Services have been graduated from Literacy Volunteers of America’s tutor-training workshop in basic reading.

They will be assigned to help teach others to read.

The new tutors are Sandy Allen, Diane Barton, Eleine Boe, Marilyn Burnside, Curtis Chan, Christa Christopherson, Mary Ann Felcoski, Janet Hermer, Catherine Lewis Ida, Elaine Keller, Marina Marrelli, Joyce Neumeister, Kerry Parker, Cung Pham, Linda Stevens, Jean Straub, Diamond Tran, Donna Tumlin and Barbara White, all of Huntington Beach.

Others are Christina Burkart, Henry Davis, Mitch Everton, Shelly Gilmore, Mary Knipp, Eleanor Leveille, Judith Murray, Cathy Nishimuta and Kathleen Pyle, all of Fountain Valley.

Rounding out the group are Deidra Sanard of Westminster, Juanita Race of Lynwood, Robert Burns of San Juan Capistrano and Laurie Staebell of Santa Ana.

Dana Hills High School junior David Betanzos has been selected to attend the July Boys’ State in Sacramento to gain an understanding of government.

The Laguna Niguel youth, son of Margaret and Ed Betanzos, will spend one week in the capital with other youths selected from around the state.

The nationwide program is sponsored by the American Legion. The Laguna Beach post is sponsoring David’s participation.

The Tustin-based civil engineering and land surveying firm of Williamston & Schmid has been presented the Project of the Year Grand Award by the California Council of Civil Engineering and Land Surveyors.

The firm was recognized for its master plan of drainage in an expansive desert basin in Apple Valley.

It is the highest honor offered by the professional association serving the state’s engineering industry.

Patricia B. Langlin of the North Orange County Regional Occupational Program has been named California’s outstanding vocational administrator by the Assn. of California School Administrators.

The Anaheim Hills resident is director of educational services for the program, where she has worked for eight years.

The nine-member Laguna Hills High School sophomore team that won the 10th-grade Orange County Academic Decathlon was honored at a recent awards ceremony at Anaheim High School.

The team members were Jeff Ferrell, Dave Huang, Karen Gross, Tom Wasserman, Anne Etienne, Chris Shortell, Paul Cary, Jim Parks and Aaron Brunstetter.

The team was one of 30 competing in the decathlon, held at Edison High School in Huntington Beach.

Three-year-old Joshua Belasco, son of Linda and Steven Belasco of Fullerton, has been awarded $750 in parent-infant financial aid from the Alexander Graham Bell Assn. for the Deaf.

Joshua, who is severely to profoundly hearing-impaired, was one of 92 youngsters from throughout the country to share $47,000 in grants.

He is being educated with an auditory-verbal approach.

The Washington-based association’s aim is to improve opportunities for hearing-impaired individuals.

In a series of awards to employees of St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, Lee Ann Donaldson of Fullerton, director of community outreach; Karen Skipper of El Toro, music therapist; Alice Haseman of Garden Grove, a staff nurse; and Freddie Bondoc of Corona, of environmental services, have been presented 1991 Values in Action Awards.

San Clemente resident Mike Vail, senior facilities director for the Santa Ana Unified School District, has been named chairman of the Coalition for Adequate School Housing, a statewide lobby attempting to gain additional funding for public-school construction. He was vice chairman of the group last year.
