COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Northridge Wins Volleyball Title

Ken Lynch had 14 kills Saturday to lead Cal State Northridge past Ball State, 15-10, 15-6, 15-12, in the championship match of the Volleycard Classic volleyball tournament at Ball State in Muncie, Ind.

Neil Coffman, the tournament’s most valuable player, and Coley Kyman each had 13 kills and Mark Root added 12 for Northridge (19-6). Lynch and Kyman were all-tournament selections.

BASEBALL

Canyons 15, Ventura 2--Scott Roth and Pat DeBoer each had three hits to pace a 19-hit attack for Canyons (14-13-1, 9-3 in conference play) in a Western State Conference game at Ventura (20-10, 5-7).

Bakersfield 13, Oxnard 0--Kim Johnson and Mario Sanchez each doubled for host Oxnard (15-15, 7-5), which managed just four hits in the WSC game.

Santa Barbara 11, Valley 8--Santa Barbara (8-4 in conference play) scored seven runs in the third and Valley (7-18-1, 4-8) never recovered in a WSC game.

Pierce 9, Santa Monica 5-- Erik Martinez singled, doubled, tripled and drove in two runs to lead Pierce (14-11, 7-5) to a WSC win.

Cal Lutheran 12--12, Claremont-Mudd 3--2--Jeff Parsons’ second home run of the season highlighted a four-run sixth inning in the first game to start CLU to a sweep of a nonconference doubleheader at Cal Lutheran (17-6).

Cal State San Bernardino 8-9, The Master’s 6-4--Dan O’Sullivan hit his fifth home run for Master’s (15-12) in the first game of a nonleague doubleheader. Russ Henzie added two hits and three RBIs in the opener.

SOFTBALL

Cal Lutheran 9-11, Whittier 4-1--Leslie Stevens and Kim White combined on a one-hitter and Stevens added two hits and three RBIs for Cal Lutheran (16-2) in the second game of a nonconference doubleheader. Stevens improved to 9-1.

In the first game, Michelle Campos and Laree Reynolds each had two hits for Cal Lutheran.

TRACK AND FIELD

Fresno Relays--Sprinters Wes Dunston and Charlotte Vines and hurdlers Tyrone Jeffries and Kim Young stood out for Cal State Northridge in the meet at Fresno City College.

Dunston finished second in the men’s open-intercollegiate 100 meters in a wind-aided 10.43 seconds, while Jeffries finished third in the 110 high hurdles with a wind-aided 13.97.

Vines won the women’s college 100 (wind-aided 11.83) and Young placed second in the open-intercollegiate 100 low hurdles (wind-aided 13.7).
