MISSION VIEJO : Council to Act on Water-Saving Policy

Share

The City Council will be asked to approve a water conservation policy tonight, putting an official stamp on techniques that have been used to successfully save water in Mission Viejo.

Pointing to a 43% reduction in water use over the past year for park irrigation, and to citywide compliance with a 20% reduction imposed by the Metropolitan Water District, the city staff has recommended incorporating the conservation techniques into the city policy.

The methods include conversion to drought-tolerant plants in the 29 parks and use of moisture sensors to prevent over-watering.

The policy also proposes long-term measures, such as conducting research into new technology to improve conservation, and installing efficient watering systems such as drip and bubbler irrigation.

Under the policy, city staff would also closely monitor and coordinate water use by landscape contractors and school districts.
