COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Titans Score Three in Ninth, Beat Chapman

Cal State Fullerton’s Craig Fairbrother singled home Phil Nevin to cap a three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the Titans a 9-8 victory over Chapman at Amerige Park on Tuesday.

Nevin hit a one-out triple to left field to score Frank Herman and tie the score, 8-8. Chapman’s James Cass then loaded the bases by intentionally walking Frank Charles and Jason Moler before Fairbrother’s hit. Jason Moler hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning for Fullerton (23-17), Chapman is 9-28.

In other nonconference baseball:

San Diego 6, UC Irvine 5--Kevin Herde hit a one-out home run to center field in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 5-5 tie for San Diego (17-23-2). Bryant Winslow hit a two-run home run in the third inning for UC Irvine (19-24). In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Christ College Irvine 8, Westmont 7--Christ College (22-11-1, 8-4) rallied from a six-run deficit to set the school’s single-season record for victories. Matt Olson allowed only one run in 8 1/3 innings of relief to earn the victory.

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Southern California College 3-7, Christ College Irvine 1-5--Tammy Moore had two hits and two runs batted in for SCC in the first game, and Tracy Scofield had three hits and one RBI in the second game for visiting SCC (16-14, 6-4).

In nonconference men’s tennis:

USC 5, UC Irvine 1--Freshman Brett Hansen-Dent won UC Irvine’s only match when USC’s Brian MacPhie had to leave the match with stomach problems. Second-ranked USC (25-1) swept the remaining matches at UC Irvine (No. 16, 17-7).

In Big West Conference women’s tennis:

UC Irvine 6, Cal State Fullerton 3--Ali Yoshimoto won 6-0, 6-4, extending her singles winning streak to 14 matches for UC Irvine (14-11, 5-3). Kelli Moore won in No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-1, for Cal State Fullerton.
