Heinrichs Provides Punch, Spears the Punch-Outs for Grossmont

Second-ranked Grossmont used a little thunder and lightning to get its first victory Tuesday in Grossmont 2-A League play. Jon Heinrichs hit a grand slam, and pitcher Mike Spears struck out nine in a two-hitter to power the host Foothillers over Valhalla, 9-2.

Spears, a senior right-hander, lifted his record to 6-0, and his overall varsity record is 13-0. The Foothillers improved to 14-1 and 1-0 in league. Valhalla fell to 10-6, 0-1. Spears entered the game with a 1.61 earned-run average and allowed two earned runs. He walked one batter.

Spears got all the support he needed in the bottom of the second inning when Grossmont, trailing 1-0, erupted for five runs. Sophomore second baseman Heinrichs’ grand slam over the 360 mark in left-center capped the scoring. It was Heinrichs’ second homer of the season. He entered the game hitting .333 and maintained that average by going two for four with two runs scored.
