SPORTSCOPE : Surfing Tournament to Be at Manhattan Beach Pier

A surfing tournament to raise funds for Heal the Bay will be held Saturday at the Manhattan Beach Pier.

Check-in time for competitors is 6:30 a.m. and the competition will begin at 7:30. Entry fee is $35 and includes a T-shirt, membership in Heal the Bay and a free dinner after the event.

The tournament is open to all ages and will be divided into contests for shortboards and longboards. It is being sponsored by the Dapper Dan Surfing Assn. Information: (213) 545-6938.

Karolyn Kirby and Angela Rock defeated Lori Kotas and Gail Castro to win their second consecutive Women’s Pro Beach Volleyball Tour event last weekend in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Tim Hovland and Kent Steffes defeated Randy Stoklos and Sinjin Smith to win the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals’ event at San Diego.

The Golden State Grand Prix bicycle racing series continues tonight at 7:30 and runs through Sept. 27 at the Olympic Velodrome at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Admission is $6. Information: (213) 516-4000.

Two girls from the San Pedro Peninsula YMCA swim team competed against other top national age group swimmers at the Spring Senior Nationals in Seattle April 3-7.

Another 15 swimmers finish competition today in the YMCA National Swimming Championships at Orlando, Fla.

In Seattle, Claudine Martinez (Carson) swam a personal-best 5 minutes, 1.5 seconds in the 400-meter individual medley and 2:24.55 in the 200 IM. She finished 28th and 34th, respectively. Deborah Kory (Rancho Palos Verdes) finished 29th in the 200-meter breaststroke at 2:40.58. The girls are coached by Dan Halladay.

Bill Bain, a former All-American guard at USC, will be the speaker at the monthly meeting of the San Pedro-Peninsula Trojan Club Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Nizetich’s Restaurant in Ports of Call Village. Information: (213) 547-3645.

F.C. Santos, a San Pedro soccer team for teen-age boys and men under the age of 19, will compete in the California Youth Soccer Assn. State Open Cup April 27-28 in Bakersfield.

Santos advanced through qualifying rounds with a 6-0 record. The team of 18 players from 11 South Bay schools is coached by Chuck Swanson. Pat Nave of San Pedro is club president.
